Adsense Earnings Drops - The Liar Liar Effect

On those days when I'm b*tching a blue streak about lack of Adsense revenue when I'm having record traffic, I reminded of that scene in the movie Liar Liar with Jim Carrey.

Remember when he is in the tow company compound picking up his car that was impounded?

He tells the tow driver he is GOING TO DO SOMETHING about it! (regarding the price he has to pay to get his car back)

Then the tow truck dude says, "what are you going to do about it".

Carrey can't tell a lie so he says something like, "I'm gonna stand here, wave my arms in the air, b*tch about it, fume, then bend over and take it up the *ss!

That's how I feel about tanking Adsense revenue, because I don't think there are any real alternatives out there unless you use YPN and if you are Canadian, you can't join.

Oh well......dinner time now.

I heard this refrain from lots of sites in my niche. Until one day I rounded them up, formed a co-op type of arrangement and went looking for targetted advertisers for the bunch of them.

There are very real alternatives if you look. They're not as 'easy' as adsense. They are multiple times more profitable though.

P.S. we're being motivational here :)

unless you use YPN

YPN tanked a year ago.

Or did I miss something?

YPN is long gone and MS isn't letting people into their beta last I checked a week ago.

incrediBILL - I appreciate the sentiment, BUT...

Every method you mentioned in that thread has been tested MULTIPLE times and I know I have the best config I can get. This site is old and been run through the ringer testing.

Calling me lazy is extremely ignorant buddy. I work 15 hour days most days.

Please don't put words in my mouth, because that's not what I said at all.

You said "wave my arms in the air" which I paraphrased as flailing.

Nobody accused you of being lazy, I was linking to my post with ideas to try if you haven't already.

All I'm saying is step back and rethink it one more time as somehow I always manage to find a new angle, a new set of keywords, or something going wrong with either my site or AdSense.

This site is old and been run through the ringer testing.

OLD? My site is 17 years old now and has also been run through the ringer, over and over and over, yet I still find new ways to refresh it and hopefully will continue to do so.

Sometimes I even troll the competitors sites for ideas, nothing wrong with that when you're having a mental blockage.

Besides, I know the competitors troll my site because they word some things exactly as I have them worded and they didn't use to have those words ;)

LOL. That was priceless! I work the same amount. I'm off to check that thread IBill mentions to c if I can get some juice out of that adsense thing.

Drop a URL, it's fine by Bill and I. OR you can PM it to both Bill and I and we'll take a look at your site and verify the site is perfect and cannot possibly be improved and that your niche is a perfect fit for AdSense.

However, to be fair and to prevent this from being a private consultation, we reserve the right to post exactly what we think, good or bad.

I have been having difficulties with Adsense for a few months now. Many sites aren't doing too well but one key site is significantly underperforming. One avenue I am working on is finding copies of my articles on the web and sending copyright infringement notices (and DMCAs if I'm forced to). Another is using bigger, better performing ad sizes. We'll see. Just throwing ideas out there. I know how it feels. Sometimes it can be just a few key advertisers pulling out of the game and there isn't much you can do.

Very interesting topic. I've done many sorts of strategies finding out why my adsense earnings drop. CPC is, I suspect, is really the factor. Thanks to the new adsense interface I can see the CPC on every URL and custom channels. It looks like someone is throttling the cpc..... today it is normal.....but the next day it is way too low! Maybe selecting and using keywords with higher value is one solution but I'm a little lazy right now.

Can I get in on this too? I would love to see this perfect site that cannot be improved. It'll give me something to aim for.

Now that the sarcasm is out of the way, I will repeat what I say over and over. ADSENSE IS WHAT IT IS. You're not going to change it. All you can do is change what YOU do. If you're not making enough from it, then get more traffic. Change or expand your niche or even the focus of your niche. Go outside your comfort zone and find some direct advertisers. I mean c'mon, don't you think your site is good enough to pitch to direct advertisers? Think about your users. What are they thinking when they come to your site? What are they really looking for? Do you even know who they are? Do they engage with you, send you feedback or comments or email?

It'd be a pretty piss poor site that couldn't find ONE way to improve itself and earn better. Or an absolutely perfect one. I know which one is more likely.

We do well with Adsense, but if all advertisers on the site were direct advertisers, we'd be making double what we are now. It is definitely worth going after direct advertisers as supplemental revenue. It is kind of a hassle but worth it if you need more revenue.

Quite possibly more than double. One of the publishers I work with was making $800/month on adsense. I now send him $3k-$5k per month from direct advertising. And that's AFTER I take my cut.

It's not easy though. Quite frankly I despise dealing with traditional advertising agents. The business seems filled with people who are too lazy to get a gov't job. Won't return phone calls, won't pay on time, won't respond to question, make unrealistic demands, etc. But......a lot more money in return for the woes.

Well said as always netmeg.

If adsense isn't working anymore - lose it. Phase it out in favor of direct advertising. That's exactly what I'm doing and the financial picture is starting to look a little brighter again.
