January - April 2010 v 2009

Page Imp +13.38%
Clicks -12.08%
CTR -22.29%
eCPM -0.056%
Earnings +12.69%

April 2010 v 2009

Page Imp +16.26%
Clicks -11.55%
CTR -23.81%
eCPM -2.35%
Earnings +13.52%

I'm actually quite surprised by these metrics however my 2009 earnings were still on the downwards slope at this time last year, nevertheless better than I had realised. May and June 2009 were the bottom of the slope for me therefore the next few months will be very interesting indeed.

Good for you! whatever you are doing, keep on it.

I've been comparing and all my numbers went up, including my earnings. I was pretty happy until the end of april. Now my daily earnings are below past year, same months. Who knows why... april - june are my best months but this year it doesn't look good. Strange, my traffic went up.

Last year isn't a very good metric to compare to, what with the stock market plummeting and such.

Yes and I did state that, I can't compare against 2006 every time since that is very unlikely to re-occur even though I would like it to.

The simple fact is that so far in 2010 I am doing better than 2009 even though Clicks, CTR and eCPM are all down.

Hey just look at all those bankers' bonuses, it really wasn't very difficult for them to make more was it?

Me too - though my eCPM is up. My traffic is WAY up, and I haven't even really gotten into my season yet.

My best year was 2008, and right now I'm about half way between 2008 and last year (2009 was about 20% down from 2008) I have some different sites now, so I remain hopeful.

But I'm making serious inroads in direct advertising this year, that's for sure.

Earnings roughly 16% up each month comparing 2010 to 2009. Virtually all the increase is because of increased visitors to the site. I assume more visitors because of lots more content. All UK sites.

Out of interest HuskyPup - do you find these kind of camparisons useful to make each month?

Gross income is up about 15% for Jan-April 10 vs 09.

But on part of the site I made a significant change, adding a second ad block to the pages, that change accounts for about half that gain.

So the real gain is more like 7 - 8%.

On a related note, average EPC way, way up, but CTR is way down.

Until now, each month of 2010 had been better than the same month 2009

Absolutely and especially so this last month because I thought I was doing a lot worse than I actually did do. It's also reassurring to make comparisons against the metrics leading up to MY recession lows, to what's happening now, see which sites have increased/decreased page impressions/earnings and develop further the ones where the best earnings are being made.

For instance one of my lowest CTR sections is a Coppermine Gallery (lots of views) however it has easily the highest average EPC of any other specific section. Just why that would be when there are only images on those pages I have no idea but it has been like that ever since the launch of that gallery two years ago.

I absolutely agree with HuskyPup. Month on month comparisons with previous years have always indicated a trend for my sites. If you leave comparisons any longer then there is a serious danger of not being able to act promptly on a trend.

One caveat of course, comparisons need to be based on high volume sites, smaller volume sites can go up and down extremely erratically and the changes probably mean nothing.

By June we'll have made more in 2010 than in all of 2009.

We get well over a million page views a month. I'm not sure if that's considered high volume or now.

Comparing month-to-month statistics, I see a vast improvement over 2009, but only around a 5-10% increase over 2008. Last year was pretty dismal.

I can also say that 2010 is showing signs of a recovery. While jobs are not here yet, the ones who have them are spending. I have also seen bigger crowds in the mall and restaurants are busier too.

The really shocking thing (to me) is that since April 1, I'm less than a third of last year's CTR. But I'm still up in total earnings, which shows how much the EPCs have gone up. But it's still weird.
