CPM shoots up, drops down after adding new ad

Oh that did not work as expected..!

I added a new rectangle ad in the middle of content, just to see the results. Instant rise in CPM - more than doubles. Naturally revenue goes up too. 48 hours later, CPM drops to previous levels.

Now why would this happen?

Apart from the possibility that there was an advertiser who was specifically looking for that ad format, and whose budget has run out.. is there any other reason? Is it that there is some kind of CPM for my site according to Google, which it will default to sooner or later?

It's for the same reason that I see clicks of 1.50 and then 0.01...the system is totally and utterly flawed, out of their control and they haven't a clue what to do with it.

The fewer ad units you use, the higher paying the sds shown.

The more ads units per page, the more lower paying crap is needed to fill your ad units.

the system is totally and utterly flawed

Then why run it?

Doesn't it reflect poorly on your site if it's so flawed?

This sounds logical, IncrediBill. I have seen some others too talking about removing ads from low performing channels (to avoid being smart-priced down) but is that more or less confirmed to be true now?

HuskyPup did not mean its 'utterly' flawed, I am sure. That was the voice of frustration, which is not rare in the Adsense forum!

At one time, Adsense worked because it was the best context targeted advertising solution. Then some people with their "Interest Based" advertising wrecked it. Now there is some kind of mutant combination advertising going on.

Uncle Bill, have you changed your mind on this:
The fewer ad units you use, the higher paying the sds shown.

The more ads units per page, the more lower paying crap is needed to fill your ad units.

I was reading one of your posts from quite a way back and you said you were using 3 ad units.

Is LESS IS MORE the way to go now?

I still use 2-3 ad units but my situation is different than most, i have a LOT of inventory available. Plus, no two niches/sites perform the same and you should always test which number of ad units works best for you.
