I'm interested in a discussion concerning using AdSense on a blogspot blog. I'll start the thread with the following two questions:

1. Which works better for you as far as AdSense placement - a vertical ad on the left or right column OR an ad that appears below or above each post? Or maybe another placement?

2. If I have a relevant domain name, is there a strong SEO advantage to using that domain name rather than blogname.blogspot.com ?

Yes, an actual domain name is easier to remember, discuss, and most importantly for SEO it's easier to type the URL and link to it. In terms of authority, which plays an indirect role in SEO, a real domain is better.

Fwiw, blogspot subdomains have been abused not just by people of little means in developing countries but even in the developed world. I think for some people this will affect how the blog is perceived and thus your success in terms of SEO. One can do on-site SEO but at some point you're going to have to interface with other people in negotiating a blogroll link or to look at your content or simply to visit it.

I see more benefits using your own.com Many people see the .blogswhatever.com as "you can't have your own .com" then consider less seriously the site, then don't link to it.

A .com is not a guarantee of quality but as martinibusters says, many have abused of blogspot and that's why some have instant thoutghs when they see .blogspot. Anyway I think if you build a lot of links to xyz.blogspot.com the links will be tied to that, not as if you use your own .com where is your brand, easier to remember.

How do you handle the posting of the required privacy text on your blog - Do you simply put up a post with the privacy text and use a "privacy" label?

Blogging software allows you to create a link anywhere you want it, from the top nav, a special box along the right or left gutter or you can edit the footer-include and post a link to your privacy page from there.

I've got a couple of blogs at blogspot. I did it as it was the easiest way of doing a blog (although i've now also sorted out a wordpress blog).
I get quite a good clickthrough rate for adsense - just a small block on the right hand side.
I use the blogspot blogs for people to go to from my main site (and also for some longtail keywords), so the .blogspot.com is no problem. If I was going all out to make a big impression with a blog / get high search rankinghs and traffic i wouldn't however use blogspot
