Hi,
I run a travel site and I was keen to add pages on my site.
I noticed sites like dmoz, wikipedia, etc. allow webmasters to use their content freely.

Can I place adsense on these pages if i add them to my site?

Yes, of course. As long as they have content.

Apparently adsense no longer works on wiki content.

Adsense seems to still work on wiki content but our Wikipedia site were hit hard and our ODP directory doesn't do that well.

The only content we currently make good revenues out of Adsense is our travel website with our Hotel database.

You might need to be careful with the copyright implications of using wikipedia and adsense. Wikipedia is not free content like wikitravel.

I have looked at the copyright of wikipedia and found I could not integrate it into our site without breaching their copyright.

wikipedia is free under the GNL license, according to their terms of use. YOu can do whatever you want as long as you have that GNL license link on the bottom of your content.

Maybe if AdSense detects the GNL license link on a page, it doesn't serve ads....

If you are simply doing a copy of wikipedia (as would be required under their copyright) then Google will see it as duplicated material and not place much importance on the pages.

If you make any basic changes that would help you with your Google listing then you are outside of the copyright rules.

"Webpage copies
For verbatim copying on the internet (i.e. setting up mirrors of Wikipedia), the following restrictions apply:

Title
You may not change the Title. For example, in this document, the Title is Wikipedia:Verbatim copying.

Title Page
The "Title Page" is the text just below the title, before the start of the article proper. This is currently "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", but was previously (briefly) "Find out how you can help support Wikipedia's phenomenal growth", etc."

My suggestions for any one that want to use wikipedia.

Be very careful about that for the following reasons

1) Some editiors will bad mouth you in forums, because they think they write 2 - 3 articles they can now play sheriff's.

2) If you keep the exact copy of wikipedia content on your website, you will have problems as you will receive a duplicate content penality from Google.

3) You will receive weekly or monthly letters from Lawyers, editors of certain articles that hold copyrights to some of the articles but that made in into wikipedia.

Other points you should be aware off

a) Within China and several other countries your website will be banned (eg. Free Tibet etc.)

b) You will receive nasty emails from Israelis that disagree on so many issues with this world

c) You will be flooded with emails pointing out to spelling errors

d) If you run a forum, stay away from wikipedia as wikipedia attracts a lot of students that want you to do their homework.

CTR and EPC for wikipedia is very low.
