I'm using Zoom Search engine but wondering if I should have my web developer change it to AdSense for Search.
I've been very pleased with Zoom Search engine but wondering if a web based application would be preferable.
Thank you.

Does anyone use AdSense for Search? If so, do you find it effective?

It is effective but only 1% of people and less are using the search box.

If it's effective, why are so few using it. Where did you get your statistics?

I use Google CSE instead of AdSense for Search. There are a few differences which has kept me with CSE.
Works well on my sites with some even having a healthy income from searches.

Depends on what you mean by "effective".
If you mean is it a good earner - it is for me. I have sites built around Google CSEs, and they quite well.
If you mean is it an effective search appliance for a site - well, sorta. Depends on the site. I have had problems with it on some sites (where we're only using search for the site pages themselves, no off-site pages included) because I can't weight the search enough to influence the order of the pages.
