Buzz with adsense ads

Alright, I know you folks all use Facebook and I'm about the only person on the planet that doesn't! Was looking around Google Buzz today though and I spotted a load of adsense ads in some guy's posts. Was wondering if anyone knows anything about this.

Personally I don't think it looks good - at all... very spammy in fact. Also is it legal, or are there a few people just trying to pull a fast one here.

I can't give you the answer since I'm a member of your club so that makes at least two of us:-)

C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!

I have an account, I just rarely use it. In the 30 and under crowd nowadays it's almost socially unacceptable not to have an account, even if you rarely touch it.

I use Facebook for the same reason millions of others do--to socialize and connect with old/new friends.

As an IT professional, I make it my business to keep up with technologies, social media trends, etc., so I find it interesting that so many of you avoid it. :)

Back to the question: I haven't used Buzz at all, so I'm not familiar with the layout. If you say there are Adsense ads in a post, that does seem a little suspicious. However, Facebook (and I suspect Buzz will too) allows businesses to purchase ad space on its network. However, those ads are displayed to the right of each user's wall (where posts appear).

A quick look on Google will give you the answer if you can have adsense with Buzz.

Man I find it real hard to understand why you folks don't use facebook. As celgins indicated it is part of the web just like Google, Yahoo, Bing, email, instant messages and on.
Facebook is sumtin I use both for my personal pleasure and for our business.
I haven't used buzz yet due to time constrants

Time is one thing, Facebook ain't going to increase my productivity however I have seen it in use and I consider it the most inane thing to have hit the Net.

I have e-mail I don't need any more.

I have an Instant Messenger, I don't need another.

I have text on my phone should I require it.

I have absolutely zero interest in anyone else's photographs, holidays, interests and their personal opinions or gripes and it seems to me to be the biggest waste of time at work ever invented for people who won't/can't socialise normally but sure as hell they can criticise people who DO try to do things.

To me it is yet another time-wasting and trivial product promoted as the "current must have" just because a few social commentators deem it so...guess you know now I'm not a fan of this social networking menace?

Speed? I'm up to speed, just don't expect me to be obedient, subservient and the accepted norm...I am not:-))

from Lame_Wolf:

LOL -(By the way, this means "laughing out loud," which is a huge part of social networking these days :))

I understand these sentiments, but for me, it has nothing to do with being sheep. It also has nothing to do with inadequate social skills--even though I'm not sure what "socialise normally" means!

So here are 4 reasons (I think) social networks, like Facebook, can be useful:

Personal/Social:
  • I cannot (and will not) keep in touch with 300 family/friends by phone. I'm too lazy for that. However, I can easily type a sentence to my friend in Italy to let her know that I enjoyed her presentation on CNN, and view the video, transcript and whatever else on her Facebook page. In fact, I probably would have not found her after 15-years had she not located me on the site.

  • Many people are more open (and honest) when they're able to write it down. It's a lot easier for some folks to expound on thoughts and feelings when they have time to think about it. People seem less willing to say "No," or "I don't care," in person, but have have no problem being open and honest in social networking situations.

Business
  • With millions of people flocking to social networks, the business prospects are obvious for me. There are potential advertising dollars there. Plus, some of my sites integrate Facebook and Twitter share-links which allows users to share our stories with 1, 10, 100, or 1000 others. (viral)

  • Like I mentioned before, software applications and technology changes, and I like keeping up with it. Aside from the AJAX scripting and MySQL databases that make it all work, I like to know how average people are using it.

I'm not trying to convince anyone because everyone does what they want. But like many of you, I don't follow trends "just because." Rather, I do things when they make sense to me and my business.

Actual physical socialising, not posting pictures on a wall, not networking, not sending e-mails or texting and purporting to be having "a wonderful time and life" meanwhile one is actually sat in a darkened room wondering what on earth is going on in the world.

I understand what you are saying and if you like doing that fine, I and many others do not have a problem with it, only please do not expect us to jump on board because I certainly have a lot better and more productive things to do with my time.

I cannot (and will not) keep in touch with 300 family/friends by phone.

And this is where it's quite bizarre.

I'm the same as you, I really do not have the time and can't be bothered except for half a dozen really good friends from the last 40 years of global business. We meet up maybe once or twice a year at exhibitions, have a good beer and meal, catch up on gosssip and leave it at that...even though we could have kept in touch easily enough by telex > fax > e-mail and now social networking, we've never felt the necessity to since our private lives are just that, we simply do not need this constant barrage of social information.

If there's a family illness etc in India, Italy or Brazil I'm the first on a plane, posting sympathy messages in cyberspace just don't cut it in my books.

<off topic>
The most annoying "social" menace to emanate from the US (I believe) is the annual Xmas family update letter...is it done just to make others feel totally inadequate because they are not living in a 10 room mansion, earning USD 1 million a year whilst their children are the most beautiful and intelligent ever born?

HuskyPup I don't expect nothing from you nor do I really care.

We all have our opinion mine is different. Lame_Wolf I am not a sheep nor have I ever been one. I don't follow trends I don't expect my opinion to matter or influence a person period. I don't go around promoting facebook, twitter or another social media. I really don't care if you use any social media or not makes no difference to me one way or another. It is your life chose what you want to add wihin your life.

With that said I use social media to have a continued presence in my family. I spend about 30 minutes a week on it. I am able to read about my grandchildren 900 miles away, if my sister had her colt 400 miles away, if my son is ok 1000 miles away, if my sister passed her exam 1000 miles away. I use it as a tool to stay abreast of my family and friends.

For me this is not "wasted" time but time well spent catching up on my family in this fast paced world. Does my soul good to see and read about the life of my grandchildren 1000 miles away grow up.

To you and others it is wasted time to me it is a treasured time.

Doesn't that tell you something ? Nobody wants to be near you. LOL (that's laughing out loud, apparently)

Seriously, you asked why people don't use it. Like I said, I am not a sheep. I don't have to - or want to - use it. I have a life and if I need to contact someone, I can either call them or email them. There's no need to tell the world I was squeezing a kidney.
Shoot, I don't even have a mobile or laptop. Don't need them or want them.

Ok, well, we can probably do without all the holier-than-thou. If you don't like it, fine, but you don't need to call the people who use social networking "sheep" or other names.

And if you knew how much money and business I've made with it, you might reconsider. But me, I'm hoping you all stay away. More for me. [muhahaha]

Nothing is a time suck unless you allow it to be.

from HuskyPup:

That's like saying a traditional college environment is the only thing, or the best thing for educating students. In actuality, millions have sought, and obtained college degrees via distance learning. Whether we think they are qualified to hold those degrees or not, it is a growing medium for online education.

As I mentioned before, to each his own.
I'm not trying to convince anyone because everyone does what they want.

I could care less who engages in social media, but as netmeg suggested, please stay away if you choose--that's just more money for folks like me! :)

... I really do not have the time and can't be bothered except for half a dozen really good friends from the last 40 years of global business.

I can understand that, but I have more than 40 folks I wish to keep up with, and I wish to do it more than just a few times a year. I don't like speaking for hours by phone with all of them, and I can't fly to California every time someone has a baby, so social networking fits.

The most annoying "social" menace to emanate from the US (I believe) is the annual Xmas family update letter...is it done just to make others feel...

My family doesn't do this, but I'm not exactly sure what it is. I'm guessing you're referring to personal and/or family situations (i.e. Christmas, a graduation, an illness etc.) being observed, or noted via social networking, or email?

My motives are centered around convenience, and I don't consider it a barrage of social info, or unnecessary technology.

So... I have a question: All of the folks who steer clear of this new-fangled technology (i.e. social networking), do you also avoid other technology like mobile phones, DVD movies, etc?

I'm just asking--because all of these things (i.e. social networking, mobile phones, DVD movies, etc.) are about convenience. Sure, there are those who follow trends "just because," but I'm focusing on the convenience factor, and not the extra "stuff" that comes with it.

I cannot speak for others, but I do not "steer clear of this new-fangled technology" It's a case of I don't need it, want it, have time for it, or have a use for it.

mobile ? No. I have no need for one. My life existed long before they came around, and my life will exist with them around me. But I have no desire.

DVD Players, Yes. I have a need for one.

Who said anything about convenience? <puzzled look>
I have a DVD player because I have DVDs I wish to play. I have no need for a mobile because I have a landline, and I have email. I have no reason for a mobile whilst I am out and about. I don't want to be contacted.

Same thing with laptops. I have no need for one as I have a full size tower both here in the UK and in the US.

I don't need/want to belong to any social network. If I do, I would have to start calling everyone COOL DUDZ and type in CAPITALS or in text talk. Nah, not for me.

and not about being "sheep."

Sheep are people who follow everyone else and often do so because they are told/asked to do so, and they go with the flow.

It's not derogatory. It is the way some people are. Some need to purchase the latest mobile, when the one they already have works perfectly.

Who said anything about convenience?

I did. I mentioned it right here:
I'm just asking--because all of these things (i.e. social networking, mobile phones, DVD movies, etc.) are about convenience.

People use cell phones because it's more convenient to call relatives while at the mall, rather than drive 14-miles to their home to use their landline phones. People also use DVDs for convenience; hosting movies and media on cassette tapes just doesn't cut it.

We all know what sheep means. You said:
Not all of us are sheep.
That excludes those who don't use Facebook. But it also implies that those using it are sheep. Fact is, none of us know why each person uses Facebook. Some may be sheep, but there are plenty of sheep not using Facebook as well.

No one cares what you or I think, but like netmeg mentioned, labeling folks who use Facebook is a very broad (and incorrect) label.
