Hi!

i just noticed an ad that spanned the entire width of a 468x60 unit. Is this new or am I behind?

If you mean a traditional banner graphic type ad, you're a long way behind:-)

Hmmm...I'm pretty sure I've seen them on my sites however I don't have many 468s nor specifically check them for anything like that, certainly 728s with two ads are quite common for me. I do have one company that targets me that has a graphic ad for every known ad size, pretty good they are as well.

Are you sure it was really a text ad and not just a graphic ad designed to look like a text ad?

There are two scenarios that I can think of off the top of my head in which you may see one text ad in a 468x60 ad unit.

The first is that we've determined that showing that one text ad is the option with the highest predicted earnings for you. It's based on all kinds of factors (like how the ad has performed on your site and sites like yours, which other ads are competing in the auction, relevance, bids, etc), but basically we think that a visitor to your site is more likely to find this ad useful than any combination of other ads we could show. This is the same reason why you may see, for example, 2 text ads instead of 4 in a 300x250. (Contrary to some speculation I've seen here, it doesn't mean we don't have more ads to show.)

The second is that you could be seeing a CPM text ad that outbid all the other ads in the auction in order to show on your site. Since most CPM ads come from placement targeted campaigns, and most placement-targeted campaigns include image ads, I recommend making sure all the ad units on your page are opted in to receiving both text and image ads to maximize the placement-targeted revenue from your site.
