This is my first post at webmasterworld and I've been reading the forum for quite a few months, pretty interesting indeed.
However, I am sorry that my first post is not a contribution but a question, an baffling question regarding adsense and 404 error pages!
Issue - I am using a plugin which shows 404 errors and surprisingly I see a hell lot of error pages thrown out, specifically checkout_999999.gif errors.
I contacted Adsense team previously but unfortunately the team provided me with automated answers and didn't solve the issue of /pagead/badge/checkout_999999.gif yet.
I am not sure why such errors exist. Sometimes I believe these are clicks that directed the people to my website page.
The file doesn't exist on my server (therefore the 404) but it seems like Adsense is trying to point out some local server file.
So, how can this be resolved. Any help is always appreciated.

Check your site with Xenu to see if that is happening to you.
Also, Google...

RewriteRule ^\/pagead\/badge\/checkout\_999999\.gif$ [pagead2.googlesyndication.com...] [R=301,L]
