This is slightly off topic but sort of in the same theme..

I was going to translate a welcome message into Chinese and I was using google language to do it. My entire message was rendered in box characters, which I understand is unicode. That's about the extent of my understanding though.

Do I need to download something? Change some settings? What?

How can I render appropriate language spelling on my PC?

If you mean Chinese on a web page, there are several encodings (utf-8, gb2312, big5...), or even you can use numerical html entities such as 欢迎 without special encoding (see Unicode's Unihan Database).

But the most standard way is to use the following html code for utf-8 in the head section of the web page:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

You would need a text editor such as for example the opensource notepad++, to write in utf-8.
