I had to compare previous years, I just had to!

First off,

May 2009 v April 2009 -10.25%

However this is not the whole story for me when the rise in UK Sterling is taken into account, against March it will be roughly -20%!

May 2009 v May 2008

Google Page Impressions amazingly similar
Actual clicks -45.27%
CTR -43.86%
eCPM -44.13%
Earnings -45.62%

Just to really depress myself I compared May 2009 v May 2006

Earnings -62.20% in US Dollars

Global industry, global problems, global contraction!

I used to have in mind a monthly minimum I considered as acceptable before considering another course of action however I have now smashed through that level.

Do I re-set that level now or do I simply not bother with site modifications since the hourly rate is non-justifiable insofar as I am concerned?

How do your metrics compare?

I'll say -20% in my case. I managed to compensate the contraction having some more sites, but the numbers don't lie, there is a contraction.

2006 is also our best May

Comparing May 2006 and 2009

income: 2009 is down -10%
impressions: 2009 is up 20%
ECPM: 2009 is down -39%

eCPM is our culprit. Even compared to 2008, eCPM fell by 17% although the difference in revenues is very slight at a drop of -2.15%

May vs April -3.67% and would have been far worse had I not been able to arrest the decline in CTR for the last week.

Too depressing to compare with earlier periods. Hopefully this is an upturn now. Yesterday and today so far are at the "just acceptable" level.

Other programmes were good for May but the rising $A kills a lot off.

Yep, chucking the 2 month old in at the deep end. She's going with us to a wedding in India early July followed by a week's work!

Hey, she's already tapping the keyboard:-)

Previous year is the only valid comparison! I took a look at mine and once again regretted that I am so math-challenged that I miss trends that are quite obvious to everyone else.

Anyway, our May '09 traffic was up 128% from May '08 (pageviews) while AdSense revenue was down 3% in the same time period.

Our site has been around for 11 years, covers a ridiculous number of topics and gets millions of page views per month, so we tend to smooth out any unusual blips in a given area.

All things considered (like, oh, the economy tanked), I'm fairly happy with these results. Could be a lot worse.

Any one make any changes to their site(s) in the last month, or year?

If so, how does that figure into the drop/rise in your income?

My income changed significantly, but I also made changes in the site that make comparing last month, and certainly last year pretty difficult.

Define "changes"...

My primary site is in a constant state of flux every day with content coming and going on thousands of pages so figuring out which changes caused what results is like trying to determine which tooth in a chain saw cut your hand.

$ earnings 19% down. Converted to earnings up.
Page impressions and visitors massively up.

But after the bankruptcy of GM, In daren't even look at what the $ / exchange rate is today.

Earnings for this May down 20% on last May. However, May's earnings are up 16% on April of this year earnings. Talk about a rollercoaster ride!

One mustn't forget the exchange rate for May last year. I don't have all the figures to hand but if you looked at earnings in GBP fluctuations it probably isn't as wild (at least for me).

Hang in there folks!

Revenue May 2009 v April 2009 +11.7%

Revenue May 2009 v May 2008 -0.4%

However, the YTD revenue is down a little under 10% between this year and last. This year has definitely been lower than last year until just a couple of weeks ago.

May 2009 vs April 2009: -10%.
May 2008 vs May 2009: +710%

Not coincidentally; may 2008 was when I was learning how to do things the 'right' way ;)

Revenue May 2009 vs May 2008: +19% (I was shocked)

Other May 2009 vs May 2008 Metrics (average daily):
Unique visitors: +43%
CTR: Not comparable as I added an additional slot
clicks: -31%
EPC: +84%

Site has been with AdSense for two years (just hit my anniversary). Overall, higher traffic and better EPC outweighed the drop in average daily clicks. Given the economic situation, I'm thrilled with the result.

If so, how does that figure into the drop/rise in your income?

I think it depends on what the change was. In my case, I moved my single AdSense ad unit from a "hot" zone to the coldest part of the AdSense heatmap, and CTR dropped significantly as a result. Still, I knew that was going to happen, and it was a case of sacrificing AdSense income to boost revenue from a more important source. (Mind you, some of the CTR drop may have been caused by Google, too; the clickable area in ads was reduced a while back to minimize accidental clicks.)

What I find encouraging is the fact that my average EPC for May, 2009 was up more than 17 percent over May, 2008. Whether that's the result of changes at Google (placement targeting, site exclusion filter, etc.) or more motivated clicks at my end (because users have to look harder to find the ads and the clickable area is smaller) is impossible to say.

May was lowest revenue month in 4.5 years. Revenue decreased about 10% every month this year.

However, this week looks like the best week since January. EPC way up.. visitors down by 15% - go figure.
