If your site is a forum, I'd suggest going with 300X250s mixed in with the first few posts and possibly anchor one at the footer.

We are seeing that five to six ads on active forums are best with a mix of ad networks - not just adsense

Just be careful not to let AdSense ads become so intrusive that they destroy the credibility, stickiness, and usability of your site--especially if you're trying to sell tutorials, as opposed to giving them away.

The center of the page.

But I second what John says, don't kill credibility (so scratch the center of the page idea :) The sidebar is always a good idea, but depends on the site.

This is a just a general outline
