I recently had a chance to email back and forth with someone with Adsense about optimization tips. The suggestions sounded good overall and much better than when I did one of their advice deals years ago.

As much as they made sense...it killed my numbers. It essentially put more ads on the page which in turn drove down ecpm and probably made the overall experience not as good. On the one hand, the user is given more ads to choose from and may like one. On the other hand, people may click on the cheaper ads so revenue drops. Or they just see too many ads, looks like crap and they leave without doing anything at all.

Each site is different and it just reinforces the need to test everything out, for good and for bad, no matter where it comes from. I could barely hold on for a week testing let alone the 2-3 week recommended for testing. I have kept one out of the three suggestions going.

Hardly surprising, isn't it? This being advice comming straight from Google.

Opportunity foregone.

This is why I don't just limit the number of ads - I also limit the number of pages carrying ads. Time and time again, with testing and re-testing, I have discovered this to work for me.
