where to put these ads

My site is about 740 or so pixels wide and I'm considering adsense. Where do these ads go? Is it up to me? Have any of you re-designed your site to accomodate them?

Where do the ads go? Whereever you want.

There are as many opinions on placement, and formats, as their are publishers.

Start with where they fit most easily on your page before making any drastic redesigns, and work from there making changes as you go along if you are not happy with the results.

It's hard for others to say where on your pages is best.

I have redesignned some pages to accomodate different placements several times. So far I've always ended up going back to my original page design.

Apparently I got it pretty close to right the first time around. Unfortunately, that makes my pages look like junk, in my opinion, but it seems to work for my visitors. :)

I wouldn't recommend going wider than your current 740 pixels for a fixed-width design. There are still a significant proportion of users viewing with an 800x600 resolution, so if you tried to place the ads to the right of your existing table, they would force a horizontal scroll-bar, and the ads would disappear mostly off-screen.

Best to find an appropriate position within your current table.

That was exactly why I posted the question. Thanks for confirming my suspicions. After reading these answers I'm now certain where they will go at least for now. Having carefully optimized this site I'm not quite ready to tear it apart.
