I also wonder whether others consider it useful to use Adwords even while being a publisher in order to understand the bidding and targeting process. I have also long been tempted to use Adwords to reinvest a % of income, and wonder if it is worthwhile?
I am not indulging in any speculation here. I just wonder if there are views and experiences using the two services and what they have been.
I do think that anyone who truly wants to get a better idea of how AdSense works should (at the very least) be reading the AdWords forum regularly.
People complain a lot about Google's lack of transparency, but how many of them have taken the time to learn how the other half works? Few, I'd bet.
From a learning/education standpoint, it might be useful. But unless you're spending a lot of money, the "pain" of paying clicks from MFA sites may not hit home so much. However, seeing a lot of non-converting clicks from the content network may give you some insight as to why many advertisers don't want to show their ads on the content network (and thus some insight as to why AdSense revenue may be dropping for many).
