Running Google Adsense on a Smaller Site

Success with Adsense on a web site with only a few pages?

I am in the process of building a couple of smaller web sites.

One is a 'help' site on a subject that I am knowledgable on and the other is more of a fun/fanboy exercise.

Neither is likely to be more than 5-10 pages in size (at least initially). Partly due to my lack of time and partly due to each subject not really being large enough to warrant daily regular updates.

I will optimise and promote each one in the normal way and, at some point, I thought about sticking some Google Adsense on them.

A couple of questions that I'd be interested in hearing comments and user experience on.

1. Can a small website be successful with Adsense? If so, how small is acceptable, both for Google TOS and for visitor perception of 'quality'?

2. Any tips for ad placement and so on?

1. Success is relative to your opinion, but yes. It depends basically on your traffic and niche.

2. take a look at the hotspots adsense recommends

1 page of unique and relevant content is sufficient then expand from there as and when you can however unless you have found a niche not yet covered do not expect huge traffic and earnings.

Single page sites, in my experience usually cover their expenses, 10-20 pages sites of unique and relevant content can do extremely well.

Thanks indeed.

Although, I'm interested more specifically in how those issues affect smaller sites.

Thanks HuskyPup.

Really, even single page sites?

I'm not sure that I'd dare make a single page site and put Adsense on it. Having mainly run several hundred page sites, I'm reticent about even running 5-10 page sites.

Ok, content is the key. Create a site that is useful and will attract visits. Anyway you need to promote it but generally great content works by itself.

After the site has been well established, put the ads in. Sure you can put them from the beginning but doesn't help to grow or trade links (the ads). My advice is to establish it first.

The traffic is the key for your earnings, sure, relying on your content. How much, depends on your niche. Each audience is different and your content pretty much defines the kind of ads you will have on your site. Ring tones suck pretty much, so you get the idea of your content relating to your ads.

You will need a very very useful and attractive content to have good traffic on a 20 page site but yes, it is possible.

In fact, many regular sites income is generated from their 10-20 more efficient pages. Every page generates different amounts of traffic and money.

I have a boatload of sites that have 1-5 pages of content. My top site has really only three pages (although it's database driven, the results of the database query display on the same page) Never had any problems. As long a the content is good, and the ads are few.

My standard formula is: ads+navigation+headers/footers < content = OK

if your ads & navigation and other non-unique stuff outstrips your content, however, leave the ads off.
