I'm just wondering because I'd really love to filter out all advertisers who are paying on a cost per impression basis rather than a cost per click basis.

Send a mail to Adsense support, requesting to exclude your account from the CPM ads. They will come back and ask for confirmation (along the lines of "Do you really want to remove CPM ads? It could hurt your earnings..."), and you confirm. Then, a few weeks later, CPM ads are gone from your account.

I'm curious how many other publishers have opted out of CPM ads?

I opted out for a while, but then I opted back in.

I did the same thing netmeg did. Hasn't made a difference either way. I get virtually no cpm ads on my site.

With the low click rate I have had this month I think I might do better if I could get some CPM ads.

Think twice. Do you really want to give away tons of traffic for fractions of a cent?

What has the general experience been here with CPM and adsense?

I did, no regrets.
There are many other cpm networks out there, if I am to be screwed, I might as well choose when and where.

They never show on my site, I assume because the advertisers never bid high enough. From my experience and what I've read, they are only going to work on in some areas. There have to be enough advertisers using them, and bidding high enough to outbid the CPC ads (Google in theory compares the earnings and only puts the CPM ads on your site if the eCPM from the CPC ads is lower). If you think that's the case for your site or sites, you should enable them and see. In your reports, if you select the option to display the statistics by individual ads, you can ask for CPC and CPM results to be separated out.
