Is AdSense Aware of New Targeting Problems?

it's bringing up ads unrelated to the site

I've always felt my topic was ideal for getting well targeted ads but recently Google is focusing in on individual words and giving ads related to them.

For example they will give an ad for an word that could represent more than one object. If we could put in some words telling what our site is about like we can for AdSense Search I think this problem could be prevented.

I would really rather get less ads than ads that are totally unrelated to the topic.

Funny you saying that because a site I was looking through yesterday had an ad for "mortgages".

Utterly irrelevent to the site in question.

Glad someone mentioned this. One of my pages mentions the word Rabbit, and is now getting adverts for Rampant Rabbit.

My site uses PICS-1.1 "http://www.classify.org/safesurf/" L gen true ... so why can't adsense bots pick up on this and stop sending me adult topics, homosexual sites and suchlike.

i dont know if this is a contextual-targeting issue or a profit-maximizing issue. my understanding is that google places the ads that generate the most profit from each of your pages. in this sense, publishers' and google's interests are aligned.

usually, contextually relevant ads will bring the highest revenue, but sometimes, especially for high cpc ads, a non-relevant ad might generate the most revenue. even though 1/3 as many people might click on a mortgage ad (on a non-mortgage-related website), if it pays 4x than a relevant ad, then google is tempted to display the mortgage ad.

elsewhen: if that is the case, I would rather have lower paying clicks, but 100% related to the page.

Think of the Goldilocks and the 3 Bears senario.
Will I get adverts for faerie tales ? shampoo? porrige? new beds ? gay sites ?
All are related, but only one wanted.

You may be experiencing what they call "site targeted" ads. You can run an advanced report to see if this may be the problem by verifying that you are indeed being targeted by advertisers.

If so, G will show ads on your site that have nothing to do with your content, but solely because an advertiser chose to market in your site's "category".

This is not something you can easily control. On G can turn it off for your entire account.

You mean in the ARC ? If so, none of the site were targeting me.
I used to get far more related adverts in that category. Less so now, and some waaay off topic.

For that particular page, the adsense preview tool showed about 50% non related adverts, and most were targetting the word rabbit than anything else.

I had Google block targeted ads some time ago.
