Is That It Until January?

Knowing how my AdSense earnings decline from Thanksgiving Day until the New Year I suppose, for others like me, that's it, is it?

An extremely interesting metric I now have for October through until 25th November v All 2008 average:

Clicks, CTR and Earnings all down ~20%

Page Impressions are about the same but does this mean anything these days?

And for those on-line shoppers according to the BBC:

Online shoppers in the US spent $8.2bn (£5.3bn) in November, down 4% on last year's figures.

[news.bbc.co.uk...]

Ho hum...from the UK Happy Holidays to those celebrating it:-)

I'm there too. I compared my trend to the one last year... the same... I prepared some content related to the end of the year, Christmas, traditions and celebrations... but it seems things are like they are.

Traffic went down very little, the clics and their value went down noticeable...

I'd guess that it depends on your topic. The U.S. Thanksgiving-through-Christmas period is always slow for me, but if I owned a site called Last-Minute-Xmas-Gifts.com, maybe I'd do better. :-)

At the rate I'm going, I can probably buy you a glass of beer this Christmas, Husky... or... maybe not a beer... just the foam on top...

Is That It Until January?

Yep. That was the year 2008, Adsense-wise.

Just who are these people who spend so much at Xmas?

Apparently they're not my visitors because I'm going through stinky days right now with Adsense.

Should I use some kind of welcome sign that reads: "British shopaholic welcome" ?

Expect another record-earning quarter for good old Google (who can not do wrong).

And just how was your Thanksgiving Day?

OUCH, ouch, ouch...Sunday traffic and an excellent EPC however the lowest clicks' day I have ever had!

The only consolation I have at present is the dire state of Sterling which is keeping my earnings look semi-reasonable, if it were still at 2.00 it would be a blxxdy mess.

Just checked my stats________________________flat lining, dead, on its back!

Nothing, hardly any traffic from anywhere. I thought I'd been bombed from the SERPs however all is ok there.

This is very strange for my sites considering the volume of Asian, Middle Eastern and European traffic I normally have. I do appreciate that there are some very serious news events occurring at this very moment but this is making Katrina, Xmas and New Year's Day look positively bountiful.

For those with not Xmas sites, are you seeing similar?

My traffic was down somewhat yesterday (U.S. Thanksgiving), but EPC and CTR weren't off much. November has been very strong for EPC, not so strong for CTR.

My AdSense eCPM and affiliate sales continue to be soft, but display ads continue to do well--possibly because display advertisers realize the importance of building awareness and promoting their products or services even at a time when consumers are holding off purchases as long as they can.

Its still a little early to see if this is just a Thanksgiving dip or something more serious. Hope this thread stays alive another 5 days or so. My markets are non-Holiday, non-retail.

My earnings was the turkey being carved slowly to the bones.

My earnings was the turkey being carved slowly to the bones.

Yeah, with you on that one. Luckily I brew my own beer so at least I won't have to use my meagre adsense earnings to buy myself a pint on Christmas day.

Oh heck...and just when I thought it couldn't go any lower, Friday's EPC was slashed and with the second lowest page impressions of the year a new earnings low for me was set.

So far today's looking even worse...roll on next week with fingers crossed that everyone finds their "on" button again!

ditto. sigh.

I don't think even if I knew where the "on" button was, that I would be in control of it. Google has control over all the buttons.

Hate to bring up another negative point, but its about time for the annual Holiday shake up in the Google index. For those of us who have suffered thru this before, it means watching traffic drop as a new set of serps displaces many hgh ranking sites until another new dance sometime in January or so.

You all must be the saddest bunch of grumpy old publishers.

Suffering down here too btw, but I smile when I remember that I've got food in my fridge that's older than Google!
Cheer up.

Me too if you count chocolate as food. I've got a chunk of chocolate that I know is twice as old as Google, and it's still good. Stuff lasts forever!

BTW, what is normal anymore?

heck Hobbs, if I was earning as much as you and got hit hard, I'd still be sitting pretty and enjoying life.

icedowl... good thing I prioritized Adsense long ago as the fancy wrapping around my chocolate. With or without it, I'd still have my chocolate.

You all must be the saddest bunch of grumpy old publishers.

Not half as sad and grumpy as the Google beer token station owners! I went out last night to use up some of my tokens and it was dead, I've never seen it so quiet, ever.

its about time for the annual Holiday shake up

Yep I was thinking exactly the same a couple of days ago...must stop thinking negative thoughts:-)

It's dead easy and cheap too, but probably against the adsense TOS to even talk about it!

Worst day ever yesterday by the way - still smiling though because there's still brew in the barrel and no need to be grumpy!

Here too. Well, almost. Adsense revenue was second lowest in 2008; definitely testing how low it can go before ad blocks are being pulled...

Looks like Comscore are picking up a different set of figures now. They report that e-Commerce spending is on the up over last year for the last two days. Lets hope the trend continues for the next few weeks. Source:
[comscore.com...]

The bones of the article are:

"Early reports suggest that Black Friday sales in retail stores were slightly better than anticipated (--my comment, whose anticipations, their's?!--) in this depressed retail climate, and that performance apparently (--my comment, why apparently all of a suuden? The original figures were theirs and so are the new ones--) extended to the online channel, which saw sales on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday combined increase 2 percent versus year ago,” said comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni. “It’s probable that on Black Friday consumers responded positively to the very aggressive promotions and discounts being offered in retail stores, so it will be important to see how they respond to similarly attractive deals being offered online on Cyber Monday, the traditional kick-off to the online holiday shopping season.”

The problem at this time of year is that comparisons of the odd day or so, even the odd week or so, are so misleading. Unfortunately for us, gazing hopefully into the future, only real figures ever tell what actually will happen(ed). And real figures only come from hindsight. There simply are no really reliable sources of information for what is going to happen over the next month. Time alone will tell. I'm maintaing a positive attitude.

The basics still apply even in these crunch times, spread your risk, do your best and trust your own judgement. I'm back to a short period of contract work to bolster the finances, just insurance I hope!

Oddly, we are having a strong Sunday today. I always think that G burns through those monthly budgets on these last days of the month. I am not complaining. ;-)

OK, I can afford it.

Today, December 1, is "Cyber Monday," which is said to be an accurate indicator of how good or bad the holiday season's online sales will be.

Of course, some categories may do better or worse than others. One survey suggested that books will be the #1 holiday purchase this year; that may be good news if your site features books, but it won't do you much good if you own the domain yachts-for-hedge-fund-managers.com and your readers (and advertisers) are feeling bearish these days.
