contextual-placement reporting broken ?

When I set the "show data" field on "by individual ad" and tick the "Show data by targeting type - contextual or placement" checkbox,

The report doesn't give me the details of contextual vs. placement any longer ... (there's a redraw and the check box un-ticks itself after a short flash of the word "false")

Anybody else seeing this ? Or is it just me and should I while at support ?

yes. I broke it yesterday. probably because I keep checking my stats every minute. ;-)

not to worry. they'll have it repaired soon enough.

My earnings has during the past 2-3 days declined with about the same amount as I usually get from placement ads. Coincidence?

I'm glad someone finally posted something about this. Now I know it's not just me.

I'm seeing this, too, and I believe it's probably not just a bug. When did this start?

I noticed a number of advertisers that I would put directly to the "placement/CPM" bin, due to the nature of the targeting and the impact they are having on certain pages. But hey, I opted out of that part of Adsense, and so I would not expect to see any of this on my sites.

The only way to find out whether there are placement/CPM ads on that account has been the reports. With this information missing from the reports, there is no way to see what type of ads Google is putting on the site. I think Google has become a little bit more opaque.

Geez, why do they offer reports AT ALL?

I have a conspiracy theory about this one. What if Google are now using doubleclick to serve placement ads and they've not got the integration quite right yet? Have seen some odd doubleclick related log errors recently too.

vordmeister:

That might be it. But could it be that they now serve placement targeted ads to accounts that have opted out of placement targeting? It could be a problem with integration, or it could be the "heck, we know better than you do" approach that is so common with Google.

What do the error messages in your log files look like?

I posted a few words about them, but it may be another fault with my own site rather than a general thing. Specifically these would be flash ads which I believe I have turned off in my account. [webmasterworld.com...]

How much from Your income is from placement ads?

Until last week, my was nearly nothing

I posted, that this suddenly increased to about 3%.

I assume Your placement share is much higher, because at the daily up and downs of stats, 3% less is practical invisible.

How is Your general eCPM

Would you range it in the lower or upper regions

According to my current theories, only low eCPM sites can have a high share of placement ads.

jetteroheller:

I cannot disclose my eCPM as it would be a violation of the Google AdSense TOS, but let's put it like this: I serve a few million page views per day, and this explains why I get lots of placement targeted ads.

I still see the same "bug" in the reporting system, and I'm still down 25-30% in daily earnings. It might be a coincidence, but it's odd that my earnings is down with the same amount that I used to get from placement ads, and that this started at the exact same time as the "bug" in the reporting system first occured.

I know the TOS, so I asked not directly.

at some million page views a day, I assume the CTR and eCPM are in the lower regions, so at the bidding process, placement ads have a higher chance to be shown.

I mean let's assume
5% CTR and a 20 Cent contextual add. So the system assumes showing 1000 times this add would bring $10. So a $8 CPM placement add is not shown.

But the same situation on a page with 1% CTR, the CPM placement add brings much more than the pay per click ad

I'd say this has been broken for at least two weeks. I noticed this a while ago, but since I had CPM disabled I assumed Google was now just masking out targeting data altogether.

I had placement targeted ads in the past, which of course with CPM disabled you can't screen, because you don't get to use the Ad Review Center.

I think Adsense is getting too complicated for Google to handle!
