Can someone please help me with this?
Seems to me you asked this already recently ..and got help and answers ..
But ...website tonite is minimal "point and click" hosting ..it gets you a "presence" quick ..and you dont need to know how to code at all ( I seem to remember it's free with a domain name there or something similar in their "upsell" packages ? ) I have a whole bunch of domains registered with them via BR and DBP ( you think of a domain name ..a concept ..and you spend the cost of a bottle of cheap wine to get it for a year ..soon you have a 4 figure portfolio with them ..many here ..I assume do the same ...) ..
but if you want pro hosting ..you go elsewhere ..and you spread your hosting ..wide ( the more you read here the more you'll reason why ) ..and then you get to have control ..
otherwise you are trying to make what is basically a skateboard ..behave like a car ..
firstly because if one host goes down ( due to financial reasons , tech reasons , data centre outage whatever ) all your eggs are not in the same basket ..
second ..it's better to host some sites in the countries for whose visitors you are targetting ..
( ie ..dot fr in hosted in France is best ..all other things being equal )..
third ..G is able to a degree to cross relate sites to owners ( or at least to associate sites as "linked" and maybe connected ) .. why give a search engine food for thought by placing linking sites within the same "block"
Some sites can be left on shared servers and even shared Ip's ( they can still reinforce others via A to H to H to E to C relationships ) .others need dedi ..some are bandwidth intensive ..some arent ..
some hosters have better pipelines than others ..
Some hosters do adult ..some dont etc ..
some hosters are better at fora ..some at heavy download ..
game servers are different to public site servers ..
think of it like transport ..feet , horses , buggies , skateboards , cycles , trucks , ferrari's ..or buses ..all will get you there ..some are more relevant for your particular needs than others at particular times ..
then there is cost ..reliability ..and if "shared" who or what else is on the box and how that may affect you ..the more control you have ..the easier you sleep ..
more detailed discussion of hosters is for the supporters area ..
to return to your other point ..seriously ..it's easier to control yourself and just not click on yoiur own ads ( and such control is good for you in other walks of life both on and off net ) ..or block the google IP's on your own machine ..depending on your OS ..plenty of info on "host files" posted here in the past ..
but best is not to click ..if the ads were fulminate you would'nt jiggle them just to see would ya ;)
I see what you are saying about having different hosts.
What you were saying about the ads is also true. Can you please tell me but how to block the IP addresses?
Is going into adsense where you can block competitive sites and putting the IP address of a computer you don't want clicking on your ads the way?
Simple way to no longer have to worry about clicking on your own ads ..
this will mean that the machine shows no ads ..neither on your site(s) nor on any others ..you make it ad blind..
Here is how to do it for adsense
via host files changing on "'doze"
firstly your host files live at the following ..
Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
Windows 2000: C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
Windows 95 or 98 or ME: C:\WINDOWS\hosts
you'll know you are there when you find hosts ..
open it using notepad
inside you'll find for example on XP PRO ..
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host
127.0.0.1 localhost
..( if you have any other entries you may have installed spyware etc ..
previous thread on WebmasterWorld here [webmasterworld.com] about this )
so let's suppose that your host file looks OK ..pristine
Now what you are going to do is add to it so that when the browser tries to connect to an ad server
and loads ads and you think you may inadvertantly click them ..and get banned ..
instead the browser goes to host files ..finds these extra lines ..and shows you no ads ..
because it redirects the call to the ad server ..to your own machine ..
now ..
below the part which says
127.0.0.1 localhost
copy and paste this list exactly like it is ..
127.0.0.1 adwords.google.com #[Gmail ads]
127.0.0.1 pagead.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 pagead2.googlesyndication.com #[Google AdWords]
127.0.0.1 syndicate.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 syndicate2.googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 googlesyndication.com
127.0.0.1 adservices.google.com
127.0.0.1 syndicate.google.com
127.0.0.1 syndicate2.google.com
127.0.0.1 ssl.google-analytics.com
127.0.0.1 www.google-analytics.com #[Google Analytics]
127.0.0.1 google-analytics.com
127.0.0.1 imageads.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads1.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads2.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads3.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads4.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads5.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads6.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads7.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads8.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 imageads9.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 www.googleadservices.com
127.0.0.1 apps5.oingo.com
127.0.0.1 oingo.com
127.0.0.1 www.oingo.com
..note there are at least two spaces between each 127.0.0.1
and whatever text ( adserver IP is on the same line ) ..and only "call" per line
you can also do the same thing for any other adservers that you know the name of
for example add
127.0.0.1 ads1.chitika.net
and you will not see ads on your machine from that particular chitika server ..
you can block urchin ( Urchin Tracking Module ) by adding
127.0.0.1 service.urchin.com
When you have added what adservers you want to block "calls" to then you close ( via the lil' red X in the top right corner of note pad ) the file ..it'll say that "changes have been made to the file" and "do you want to save them" ..you select yes ..
you sleep more soundly :)..HTH
there are more adservers out there ..so others here will add their lists hopefully ?
this is an old list I picked up for someone else ..credit isnt mine ..adservers change ...rotate ..come and go etc ..stay up to date
I dont use one ..I just dont click :)
But you can find ready made lists by searching for "host file list"
For vista ..I dont know if hosts resides in the same place ?
( I have vista ( which I never use ) in multiboot on another machine which is doing some "render" work and
is tied up at the time of posting this )..
So someone will need to jump in to tell you ..
Likewise for mac and nux ..

First of all, I really wanted to say thank you for helping me with this. This is really a big help.
I do use Windows Vista and I think the files I have to access are somewhere else. If you know where I might be able to find them, can you please tell me or if someone else might know can you post it?
This would really help me out.

Same place as Windows XP (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc)
You will need to open the hosts file as Administrator or you won't be able to save it. (if you haven't disabled UAC)
LeosGhost or Marcel,
Maybe you guys know this. I looked at the file and I saw that it already had code there similar to what ChicagoFan wrote above for adsense for another software program, in a different industry. Can I just skip two spaces from where that one ends and copy and paste the code from above for adsense?
if your hosts file already had "code" other the the basic examples given by microsoft in a clean install ..
your machine "may" have been compromised in the past ..
you should not already have whole bunch of "code" or entries in that file ..if this is the first time that you have opened it ..

Do you think when it was installed on the computer the code could have been automatically put into the host file or does it have to be copy and pasted?
again
no way to know ..we cant see it
The other software is working.
that could mean you are Ok and the code you found is what should be there ..or it could mean that the code you found should not be there and that you machine seems to be working ok ..and may be doing anything and or talking to anyone behind the scenes whilst you are connected ..again
no way to know ..we cant see it ( what you found when you opened your hosts file ) ..
you could try copying and pasting it here ..if mods and admins are Ok with that ? ..that would stop us all diagnosing in the dark :) cue Bjork song and movie ;)..sorry ..couldnt help it ..I like the Icelandic elf ;)

Let's say that the code is supposed to be there because it is required for that software to run.
my answer to what you then say ..this
Do you think it is ok to skip two spaces and copy and paste the adsense code that you wrote?
is ..you decide ..you've obvious become the expert in what is "required" code and entries "in host files" and what 'doze in any flavour needs to "run" since this thread began ..:)
Others may find that what I and marcel posted to you is usefull ..or you can advise subsequent posters in the light of your new found expertise as to what is required for software to run ..
I am not an expert by any means and since the code is already there I don't know what to make of it. So since the software is working I am just saying that it is ok that it is there, and is it ok to post your code after that?
Are you guys cool with what I wrote now?
and since the code is already there I don't know what to make of it.
is it ok to post your code after that?..what is to misunderstand there ..it's the second time I suggested it ..
no-one can comment on if it's safe to add what we can all see ( what I posted ) to what only you can see ( what's in your hosts file now )..and the fact that windows appears to be working OK means nothing ..it does many things that Redmond never intended nor dreamed of ..and all with the semblance of being normal and just a standard vanilla clean install ..I'm typing this on a machine which is running a modified XP pro that has slimmed down considerably from the original product install version ..many of us dont like bloaty code and OS installs with apps and features that we dont need to just surf ..so we take them out prior to install ..which means that machine files wouldn't look like those on the last XP pro machine that you ran ..but it still works ..
Anyway that is OT ..but serves to let you see that not very file you may meet is "original" ..and what you think is original ..may not be so ..who knows ..and we dont want to make you click your ads due to a misconfigured hostfile ..do we ?
added ..where I am it's getting late so ..if the mods check out what you have got ..and you post it ..I will look tomorrow ..'less someone else ( marcel) ..there's plenty of people here know how to hack a hosts file ..maybe steps in to help you understand ..the important thing is that you understand how it works and why ..many posters here ask for a quick fix ..in many areas ..thats Ok ..but it's much much better if they understand why the answers or suggestions that they get work ..that way they can help others ..later in their turn ..OK :)?

Thanks for the additional info that you wrote in the post. I understand some of what you wrote but not all of it. I have not worked with computers on that level.
I think what you said about sending a PM to the moderators is a good idea. They can probably look at it and tell me if the code is ok.
Is it ok to ask you some questions about this as I work on it?
To answer your question at the end, that is cool with me. If I know something that can help someone, I will help them out.

good ..wait to hear from them ..

better to wait to hear from the mods about posting the code you already have ..and Iwill be gone til tomorrow ..plenty of others here though ..:)
If I know something that can help someone, I will help them out.
that's why we all stay around after our first question ..
BT once said to me that the most usefull thing we can do here is to click on the unanswered posts link ( it used to be on the extreme right at the top back in the day ) ..and then go through the posts there to see if we could be of any help , suggestions or answers or even anew take on a problem posed ..still holds good .
What one learns as a programmer can be ( and usually is ) "complex" to others ..
I learned with punch cards and fortran and cobol waaay back in the 70's ..but me ..a programmer ? heheheheh
I just tinker with stuff to amuse myself ..
There are lots of real programmers here though ..most of whom will be falling around with laughter ( with good reason ) at the idea that I might be thought to be a programmer :))
