Is Knol a concern for publishers?

Hypothetical: You have a site about widgets. You are currently working on 5 good articles about various aspects of widgets that you plan to add to your site.

Should you instead submit those to knol and establish yourself as a widgets expert at Knol (before someone else submits similar articles to Knol) or should you go ahead and publish on your own site alongside your AdSense display?

Why not both? You own the articles when they're on Knol, you should be able to publish them wherever you choose.

In fact, you can write a basic article on Knol and have links to your site for a more in-depth analysis on the topic.

I think knol will be much like wikipedia in many ways.

Would you put your articles (or at least parts of them) on wikipedia?

The big difference may end up being how they handle links - you may have a bit more freedom in linking back to your own site for additional detailed information.

My thought on knol is that you have a summary article about widgets, with good widget info, then point back to your own site for more detailed widget info for those who want it.

My question is this: does anyone know if the links at knol are labeled as "nofollow"?

They are all nofollow links.

Your second sentence sounds like a do-er. I imagine if you publish them in entirety in both places, you could possible get hit by duplicate content issues.

I mean, if they are exactly the same, and they're going to deprecate one - it's probably not going to be the Knol version.

Well I hope Google won't be making us jump through too many hoops to complain about copyright infringement, like they do with their free and anonymous blog services.
