Do large ads pay a lot better?

Is there a correlation between ad size and ppc?

I'm thinking of widening my site (800 > 1000 px) to be able to use larger AdSense ads. The reason I want to use larger ads is because I assume larger ads pay more than the smaller one's I currently use.

But maybe my assumption is wrong so I thought I'd ask.

I'll need to do a considerable amount work adjusting graphics, the ads themselves, etc. to fit the extra width. I also have to pay a web designer to do the widening.

I'd appreciate anyone who could tell me their experiences with smaller vs larger ads at they relate to income. thank you!

I don't think large ads pay any better. I'm an advertiser, and I create all sizes mainly so that I have something to fit every space that's available to me; I don't specify different bids for different ad sizes.

Use the size that makes sense to your page and keeps it in balance. You'll probably get more earnings if it's noticeable, but not overwhelming your content.

Thank you netmeg! I somehow didn't expect to get a reply from a advertiser but your take on it is very interesting and makes a lot of sense.

It was just what I needed to make my decision. Not going to widen the site. I'll spend my time and money on continuing to write good content for the site...that serves all of use well: site visitors, advertisers...and even the site owner.

Just one thing to consider...
For text ads, some of the larger widths or heights allow more advertisers, for example 4 advertisers' blurbs, instead of 3. For some websites, that may be beneficial as it gives readers more choices, more chance to find copy that makes them want to click. For other websites, that may be a distraction.
On my sites, I experiemented on a few pages with different size ads until I found the ones that seemed to work best at getting clicks, while still fitting into my overall design.

Smaller ads get clicked less, so ad size *may* affect your total earnings. I suggest to not overoptimize your revenue, as your site may look like a MFA site (see other thread for discussion) which is probably to be avoided if you are serious about being a long-term web publisher utilizing Adsense to monetize.

I have heard that the closer you put the adsense code to the <body> tag, the higher the payment can be, but i found that not true for my case.

I also thought that link units dont pay well but i was wrong. some of my highest per click earning was from link units.

i thought video units may do well for earning. i was wrong again. video units pay about the same, there were good earning clicks and bad ones, just like any other type of ads.

so i tried out the small rectangle and the big ones, but didnt see any difference.

now my guess is that they're all the same.

my site is still brand new tho so perhaps i will think differently later when i get more numbers...

i am still not sure about image ads tho because i havent used them yet.

I would replace the smaller ads, not adding additional ones.

From the discussion here, I'm not convinced it will be worth my time and effort to widen the site for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for all the other helpful comments.

Have I missed something?

Surely the widest unit is a leaderboard 728 x 90? I have several advertisers who have single image/banner ads using this and the skyscraper 160 x 600 and they seem to pay very well for my niche.

Or are you considering using 2 units 250 x 250 side by side? They'll easily fit in an 800 page with a 200 navigation. I've found this combination one of my best CTR units.
