AdSense and the iPhone?

I own an iPhone and can use it for nearly everything I normally would use my laptop or desktop for. Now with the 3G model at $199 on it's way in a month, is it possible that a significant amount of traffic is going to be shifting to mobile, specifically the iPhone? If so, how does AdSense play into this new arena?

Personally I think this is a very interesting question but not just because of the iphone. More and more people are using their mobiles to check the internet.

Just the other day I was asking how to best design a site for a mobile: [webmasterworld.com...]

The number of feedbacks asking to make a mobile version of our site is increasing very rapidly (we use flash, and it's not available in many devices).

I am planning to have an "iphone" limited version of my site, although I do not see the potential of AdSense in the mobile world due to the small display. It is ok for browsing but not for advertisement, as far as I can see. Maybe I am wrong.

Yes, this is the future. iPhone has everyting: phone, internet, music, etc. , more and more people will be using this device in the future. That's why it's important to design your site as simple as possible, with less graphic so it downloads fast.

According to my Analytics report Ipod and Iphone browsers are ranked in fourth and sixth place, but still less than 1% of total visits.
However the screen resolution reports don't show anything for 480x320.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I'm curious how AdSense will monetize the mobile platform, because like Pepito, I'm having difficulty imagining how too given the small size of the screen.

I dunno, I'm thinking of making a mobile version of my main site, because it's an event site, and would probably lend itself to that pretty well. Not sure how to go about it though. I have an iPod Touch, and it looks just like it does in Safari, but that's a bigger screen than most mobile phones.

I thought Adsense already have ad blocks for mobile. I saw that in my account.

Yes brianng you're right, thanks. I just logged in and there they were. How long have they been offering this?

I don't think it is necessary to use Adsense for mobile for the Ipod/Iphone. They run Javascript so Adssnse displays same as on standard browsers.
Adsense for mobile uses server-side scripts and requires that the site be designed for mobile devices using XHTML, WML, or CHTML.

Months, although being the market different, the advertisers could be not the same as we have in our normal account.

In my future mobile version of my site I do not have plan to add anything. It will be like a "fun" version with just images. The people will have to go to my "normal" site to see the complete version.

Maybe in 5 years there will be new publicity ideas for the mobile world.

Is it example.mobi or example.com/mobile for iPhone usage?

AdSense for mobiles has been available for at least a year I reckon, probably longer.

I have several .mobi specific sites yet do not bother running these ads precisely for one reason:

None of the my advertisers landing sites are optimsed for mobile viewing and many have intensive graphics.

There was a report the other day that mobile users did not seem to mind scrolling this way, that and the other, however, personally I'd get well pi$$ed off doing that for more than a couple of minutes.

If you launch a .mobi site you must ensure it is .mobi compliant:

[mtld.mobi...]

There is not a problem constructing a cut down/mobile site under a normal domain name which will also render correctly on most mobile screens.

I have the Google Mobile turned on for my site, but all the ads seem to be for Ebay, if I made $1 off of them in the last 3 months running them I would be very surprised.
