Huge eCPM differences across Countries

German Language Site earn 4 or 5 times English

Last autumn our English and German sites earned roughly the same per thousand. CTR and eCPM more or less equal

Late last year our English site started to crash. Now our German language site earns the same on 25K Adsense impressions per day that our English site does on 169K.

Both have near identical layouts and content is very similar, if anything the German site has more of the lower CPC content. But the CTR on the German site has held up and not crashed.

Is it just down to inventory, with US inventory lacking and so less relevant ads and lower CTR? I cannot think of anything else as the design etc are the same and have not changed over the period.

I wish my German site did!

The widget trade nature of my business is dominated by the English language therefore very few of my trade visitors bother with the German site preferring instead to go direct to our .cn/in/com.br/co.za/it/tr/etc sites.

Even Joe Public seemingly doesn't want to click on our ads even though the site ranks well and has good ads. I believe this is because the widget retail trade is extremely well-served locally all over DE/AT/CH.

Indeed, though in actual fact the market is slightly different so we don;t actually translate, except with interviews. The German content is produced over there. Since different interests, topics etc.

But certainly for us performs far better, in Adsense, than the US market.

Since different interests, topics etc.

Maybe that's the key? Is there also a difference in the topic of the ads?
That could explain the difference in earnings.

maybe, but hopefully not with this automatic translation software out there. the results are more than laughable - or rather annoying for german readers. on some topics there's a good amount of these cheapo websites in the german serps. people are allergic to this practice. it's like scraper spam, makes an ugly impression. remember no one wants to be taken for a fool.

OutdoorWebcams,

No when I say different topics I was just trying to be non-specific. I mean different celebrities (Germans have some of their own!) or movies. Bt the subject matter and area is the same...so entertainment, hard news etc.

As for auto translation...manual is bad enough. Easier to just produce or procure German sourced content. :-) I mean seems to me easier to hire some German writers than hire really good translators. Supply and demand...
