And although this was not what was expected, the usual explanations (Google is taking a larger share from publishers) are already being posted....

I bought GOOG stock at $430 just because I knew that GOOG will deliver. I do advertise with AdWords and I see the increase in PPC but most of you is reporting lower earnings.
Yes they have flat clicks but it cost more and pays less. Simple math for me. I know that some of you dont believe it but it is OK. So boys and girls, please put up more GOOG ads on your websites so I can be filthy rich from GOOG stock.
I love GOOGLE and AdSense and I dont even need AdSense ads on my websites :-)
But why let facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory?
read again! "cost more and pays less"
I will translate it for you:
cost more = higher revenues from advertisers
pays less = higher profit from publishers
So do me a favor and put up more ads on your web so we are both happy. You make pennies from every click and I will collect hefty dividends :-)
Why would that be? Because they were paying out a larger share of their revenues to publishers.
So the conclusion to be drawn is "cost more and pay even more," and not "cost more and pay less."
And that has in fact been how it has worked out for some publishers, though not perhaps the ones you know.
Personally, I am happy with the current situation, in which I am earning considerably more than "pennies per click," and have no wish to put up more ads--one block per page works for me. Your advice, though well-intentioned in the context of your beliefs about Google, doesn't work for me.
Maybe you missed some of the facts. Google's revenues were up 41%. Their profits were up only 31%. To put that another way, their revenues increased MORE than their profits.
You probably dont understand what a profit is. Profit is what you make net after all business expenses. It is more about spending. As you can see Google has higher expenses, more employees etc. Thats why the profit is not on par with revenue increase.
I cannot prove that they are paying less to publishers but I know that it does cost more to advertise with AdWords. AdSense is not for everyone and that is OK with me. This forum used to be full of UPS club members. Where are they now?
I guess you dont even know what UPS club is/was. You are new to this game and got no clue what is going on. Good luck to you!
My 2 cents.
Whenever anyone has attempted a survey around here, the majority of publishers have stated that they were making the same or better than they were before.
Most of us have down months, some bother to post, and others don't. Few bother to post about when things are up a bit. For one thing, when things are down, we like to blame Google, when things are up we like to take credit for ourselves.
Congrats on making money on GOOG! That's the good news. The bad news is that you lucked out, because your logic was flawed. They made more money, but not because they were taking a bigger cut.

Thanks!
It is not late to join the party. :-)
My logic huh? Well, my logic was telling me that the ads from AdSense were paying too low and I was getting screwed. I couldn't control what spam has been posted on my sites. I couldnt set minimum CPM or PPC or did not have tools to approve spammers (read adverisers).
I really dont need some HelloCityName.com type of crap paying pennies per click on my websites.
For more than a year we have now been selling ads directly to advertisers and ad agencies and our CPM is in double digits.
I'm glad it works for you. Just make sure you dont get banned otherwise you will have to get another 9-5 job again.
