google_alternate_ad_url setting prevents any ads from showing

I'm trying to set up a php script to randomly include ads in place of the Adsense ads if Google has no relevant ads for a particular page. I've copied the exact code that Google generated. With the line

google_alternate_ad_url = "http://mydomainname.com/ads.php";

in the code, I don't get Google ads or ads generated by my script. I can take that line out and I get Adsense ads, but that doesn't help since my goal is to serve my own ads if Google can't find a relevant ad. Has anyone experienced this? Could there be something in my url that is causing the problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've seen something like this before (see [webmasterworld.com ]), but it seems nobody else did.

I only saw this on search result pages, where AdSense used the site theme to find relevant ads.
