How to layout website content?

Now that adsense will be in the picture for my website, how would I lay the site out? I've been readng about long tail whatever, mini-sites and article marketing, but I don't think thats a good long term strategy for a site that I'm truely trying to build.

So I have my "niche" so to speak, and I've just created the first article. Something like a so-and-so's guide to something or other. Previous to this I had a few trinkets for a sale and some "about us" text. I want to drop the new article right on the main page, then worry about organizing things as I add more content.

Is that a good idea? Or should I leave the main page as is and start linking my new content? The new article is most important right now.

I would link to it.

And don't ever pooh-pooh long tail search traffic. You'll probably get much more from that than anywhere else as your site grows.

So true. We have over 1300 search terms of three or more words already this month - and many/most of those were used multiple times

Naturally!

I'm not sure whether you are referring to page design or wording here? So:

Design: Ensure if AdSense Javascript is not there the page looks normal.

<repeat>As if the ads were not there!</end repeat>

Writing: From the heart:-)

Thanks for the replies!

I was refering to page design. I've always done things from a problem solving point of view. This whole content and marketing thing is really different.
