I am redesigning a site and using more images than I'm normally comfortable with (pretty much all images and alt text), but the design is really nice and unique.

So after putting together a good portion of the layout and adding all of my alt text I decided to throw my adsense code up to see how it looked. To my suprise, after the few minutes that adsense takes to show up the first time, the ad that appeared was not relevant to the content of the site but was 100% relevant to the layout of the site.

For example, let's say my layout closely resembles a crossword puzzle, but my topic is blue widgets. The first ad to appear was for crossward puzzles!

The strange thing is that other than my alt text, there is no other text on the page, and nothing on the page says anything about the actual look of the site, just the topic itself.

So is there some sort of manual review for adsense or is Google somehow able to understand images and div layouts now?

I just solved my own puzzle.

The name of the folder that I have the new layout in is along the same lines as the layout. So Google is looking at my folder name to get the content of the page until it can crawl the page itself.

I almost had myself convinced that Google had found a way to examine an image and determine what that image contained.

Sometimes you just miss one simple detail and start to imagine that something truly amazing might be happening. Then that one little detail jumps up and slaps you right back into reality.

Welcome back ;)

The reason you mentioned based on the info you provided is the best logical reason behind all the ad display issue.
