The current pattern in the evolution of Google: Google is getting more and more aggressive.
Some time ago, Google began integrating its Media Content into the Search Results Page. Instead of just the main Google menu links to News or Images, it started putting thumbnails of about three images at the top of the SERPs, ahead of the main results links.
Then it moved News Results into the section above the fold, and now they appear at the top of the page, or mixed into the main results. Google also tested putting some of the Media Content in the right-hand column about where it has its Sponsored Results.
Google most recently has been in one sector I'm in moving the YouTube results, including the thumbnail, higher and higher from, for example, fourth to third, and on a few days in the last week,
third to second.
When you're near the top of SERPs, a drop of one place can have a huge impact on traffic, and consequently, Adsense Revenue. I've seen drop offs from first to second place of about 33%; and from second to third of 25%.
Google is now diverting traffic away from sites that make it money. Are they aware they are doing this? If so, is it an attempt to cut out us, the publishers (middlemen), and get the full revenue from AdWords clicks on YouTube? The YT pages aren't optimized. Is it still going to get more $$$ via YT than through us?
I've got another site that is still in the same place in SERPs relative to the competition of other sites, but in the last few days I noticed revenue and traffic down.
So I go to check the SERPs, and, low and behold, Google just rammed up a YouTube link above my site. Revenue is down about 50%.
I am now competing with Google!
All these changes have been very gradual so a lot of people wouldn't notice or complain.
What do you think determines YouTube link placement? Which YT video gets picked and how high does it go? Is it by algorithm?
How do we fight back to beat the YouTube links and get our money back?
Perhaps we just have to wait until Google realizes how much money it lost, and reverts to the original, unpolluted results.
How difficult is it for Google to compare all the data--so many data streams--to see if it is losing/making money from pushing publishers aside or stepping on us?
If you look at the math, maybe it actually works better for Google not to split the fees with us. What's its normal revenue share? Sixty percent publishers, 40% Google? So it saves 60% on each click each time it rams a YT result with Links higher than us? But what's the CTR like from YT?
Even if it is significantly lower, does it still make more money, because it makes more per click without us?

No, you're competing with related video content on a Google service, not Google itself.
The only way to fight it is to put up your own video content to go head-to-head with the other video content and if I'm not mistaken you can run AdSense along side that video content and do a revenue share with YouTube.
