Aligning ad content with a page

I'm curious what Adsense looks at in a web page to determine what ad content to serve up in the page? Does it look at META data embedded in the page?

Or does Adsense look at the page as a whole? I have a number of targeted pages, and I want to ensure that the Adsense ads are aligned with what my pages show.

For my site, I've found that meta tags don't matter as much as content in <p> tags, and - even more - content in the heading tag(s) such as <h3>

This is interesting. I'm wondering how to approach my situation then. I publish a focused online directory. Based on user selection, my site displays a categorical display of summary info. Let's say the category is auto-parts, so my site displays a list of auto-parts resources.

I'd like to display Adsense ads for auto-parts, so I was going to have my database generate the search results page with META keywords for auto-parts. But you say that META tags don't make much difference when serving up Adsense ads. I don't have any static pages; the pages are results from a database search.

How would I ensure that my Auto-Parts category summary page gets the right ads shown?
