Over in this thread - [webmasterworld.com...] - Google's plans to start testing video ads in search results is being discussed.

One poster wrote the following:

Geez, just when I kill my TV the cute little moving ads ('tickers' a la post-9/11) follow me from the middle of a freaking movie (after 5-minutes of commercials) to my favorite SERPS.

Thank goodness for Flashblock; my browsing experience is starting to look like tons of 'play' buttons and a precious little text. Where's that backpack & sleeping bag...?

I have also noticed that on a growing number of sites, as soon as I visit I see all these "loading..." messages with news video, ad video, etc.

It reminds me of a few years ago when there seemed to be a lot of sites that started loading a Flash presentation as soon as you arrived. The webmaster assumed the visitor wanted to see his cute video and wanted to wait for it instead of just leaving the site to go find what was wanted elsewhere. That concept seems to just about have died a well-deserved death.

But I wonder if all the video presentations aren't going to have a similar effect. Will it create a higher demand for ad blocking tools and ultimately result in publishers having an otherwise smaller audience willing/able to view ads of all types - video, text or otherwise?

I think it all depends on the video, some companies have produced some really unprofessional videos and it really hurts the company value on first impression from an ad I think having video on a landing page adds more weight to the video surrounded with sales pitch and marketing message. It also provides that opportunity for the visitor to choose if they even what to watch a video.

What happens when you are in your office and you forgot to turn your volume down... Remember those loud wav files that played on sites and almost blew your eardrums out?

Good point on the flash intros, Wow those were the days.

Why speculate? If you're worried about it, test when you have the opportunity to run (or not run) video ads.

Also, rely on your own good judgment: Ads that interrupt the user (by making him or her wait to see the underlying page) are a lot more annoying than the equivalent of embedded YouTube videos that users can activate with by clicking a "play" button if they're interested in viewing them.
