Both Analytics and Adsense under-reported our traffic yesterday, as confirmed by our server stats package.
Analytics (and similar programs) and AdSense work differently than server-based traffic analyzers do. For example, they don't count bot hits as page views or unique visitors, and users who have disabled JavaScript won't have their page views/impressions counted.
For that matter, different server-based traffic analyzers often give different numbers. In the past, I used Sawmill and Mach5 Analyzer at the same time, and the reported numbers were never identical.
In the last two days, page views have been way up according to my log-analysis software, and server bandwidth usage has been up about 60%. At first, I thought somebody might be sucking up a lot of bandwith with inline image linking from a popular forum, but my logfile analyzer shows no evidence of that. The increase in PVs appears to be across a large number of pages and search terms: mostly the usual suspects, but more traffic for each.
AdSense, on the other hand, is showing normal numbers, which leads me to wonder if impressions (not earnings per se) get capped, at least temporarily, when spikes or sudden increases occur.

Personally, I think the phenomenon you are experiencing is caused just by supply and demand, which would be the logical cause. Alas much more logical than "capping" impressions. Maybe your niche was running short of ads?
Buy hey, anyone who is not satisfied with the way Google reports the numbers should seriously consider to leave the program. After all, we all know that Google can't do wrong. ;-)
As for the question of whether Google caps or otherwise controls allocation of ads to spread a given advertiser's ads around, that's something I've suggested as a possibility for quite a while--not to protect publishers from competition, and not to prevent publishers from getting rich, but to protect advertisers.
My clicks are up almost 65% to where they were Pre-Glitch HOWEVER I cannot see these clicks anywhere in my channels nor in my earnings!
Everything is at my new 2008 norm. If the clicks were not showing I would have thought it just a normal day however 65% extra and no earnings?
If they remain after the end of the day I'll be querying from where they came.
