Does social marketing work for Adsense sites?

Anyone use social marketing & article marketing to generate traffic to adsense site?

Does it work better than using PPC advertising?

I think article marketing would be appropriate, but a true social marketing campaign would look awkward if coupled with affiliate advertising.

I mean, can you imagine the American Cancer Society running an anti-smoking campaign and when you get to their website, you see AdSense ads for Nicorette gum and nicotine patches? That would be sort of tacky. Instead, I think this sort of campaign is best funded by donations and public funds.
