Would You Say Ad Size Matters for Targeted Ads?

My 300-250 is better targeted than 234, makes sense?

would you say that advertisers can choose in which sizes to have their ads?

My 300-250 sizes are better targeted than 234 size ads.

Does size matter in terms of targeting?

Sure size matters. From what I've read some more popular sizes are the 300x250, 728x90, and 160x600.

I suppose it's simply because you can cram more info into a larger adblock, so sizes like the 234x60 and 125x125 get less use sometimes.

Generally you would have ads created in standard sizes to run across the networks. These are:

120x600 and 160x600 - Sky and Supersky
468x60 - Banner
300x250 - MPU

So when making a site it would be sensible to allow this for advertising. The other sizes I don't come across day to day and I would be surprised if any of the bigger boys would actually spend much time supporting them.

Thank you guys, this is really helpful. Otherwise, I have put a 234 size ad in a great location and it's not performing as it should.

Would you say the quality of link units has become very bad? Filled with MFAs?

Or have they improved recently?

thanks

In my case, they seem to be going downhill at the moment. But this sis a slow time of year for me traditionally so I expect to get better in a couple months. That's been the pattern in past years for me.

I'll take the bait:

Size does matter, smaller works better, but it also depends on how you use it (placement within heatzone).

only one 728x90 here myself.

I had never hard that 728 performs the best

if you put it on the top, doesn't people's attention go down the page?

above the fold below top navigation right in the center works best in my case, and that's after years of testing.

I have sites on different topics and with different layouts. I've found that different sizes of ad blocks in different locations work well on some sites but not as well on others.

And another factor is whether you have a lot of returning visitors vs. hit-and-runs.

It's another one of those things where it's useful to find something that seems to perform reasonably well and isn't gawdy to your visitors - then run with it. Continuous testing after a point may or may not be worth the opportunity cost.

Everyone mentions that the ad size 300x250 performs the best. What about 336x280? Since that is the largest AdSense offers, wouldn't it perform slightly better than 300x250?

Are you talking about AdSense text ads or "image ads" (display ads)?

I say we are talking about text ads only.

I thought you were talking image ads. As far as I know you can't target certain text ad sizes, however can make image ads to certain sizes...

Yes, and certain "image ad" sizes are likely to be more popular with advertisers than others are.
