Adsense Being Lazy

Serving ads sporadically

Adsense seems to be serving ads for a while then turning off...nothing appears, just a blank space on our sites. Anyone else seeing this?

I just added AdSense code to my site for the very first time and was surprised to see targeted ads appearing immediately. I check the page every few minutes and so far so good - no missing ads at all.

dertyfern-

How long has this been going on?

I've noticed it happening for the past few days. No adds appear for 5 or 10 minutes at a time.

I have seen this as well and my stats show 1/50 of the normal traffic. I went and looked and most pages are not even showing ads, just white space, but the complete code is in place.

I am really really REALLY getting sick of Adsense, this is totally unacceptable.

I've seen this sporadically on my site also, where the server tries to serve an image ad but instead of the usual imagad.jpg it serves a tiny (1 x 1) transparent gif that shows up as a blank white rectangle. A temporary solution might be to switch the affected pages to text ads only. I've noticed this seems to happen only for ads from just two or three advertisers, at least on my site.

I have text ads only on all pages.

This is not an isolated occurance, it has been going on about 95% of the time for the past two days on my site.

This may be the final straw here. I hope adsense is ready to stop sending a fedex every month.

It might be that there is no current campaign running for the keywords present on your site

Hugene

Not so. We've got over 10 money keyword sites running adsense and there are plenty of advertisers out there.

If your still experiencing this problem, keep in mind that google's adsense is in a state of 'flux' at the moment. The last bit of news I read on the site was certain things where being updated and added. This might be a result of it?

I noticed on a couple of my websites that this happened, I specified a locally served 'ad' and they went away, my ad showed up instead. The same occurred to all the public news spots...

BTW, great forum here.. now I just gotta learn to code CSS/HTML strict.. heh...

Thomas-

Lose the URL of your site, not allowed here.

It might be that there is no current campaign running for the keywords present on your site

Ahh, no, the site in question is quite possibly the most popular topic online (not porno the next one).

Google can really kiss my _ _ _ already. "In a state of flux"? Are you kidding me? What kind of fly by night company is this. I hope you all remember the comments I made about google being the worst run company on the S&P. I also hope you all read the article in the Financial Times about a week ago that said Google is BY FAR the worst managed company in the S&P as rated by the S&P rating criteria. I think Google got a .3 out of 100 score.

This is a joke already Google, I hope google employees read this and figure out how much of a joke Google really is.

Actually, I agree Adsense is having problems recently.

Today I visited the website of the Economist, and its FRONT PAGE was displaying PSAs

same here.... for a month this has been going on. It is so bad that it kills any chance of using adwords to drive traffic to adsense: you pay per click and then with no adsense their's no chance at revenue. Perhaps that was their intention.

I have removed AdSense from most pages as it reflects very poorly on site quality to have erratic bahavior like that.

Why would Google not want you to generate revenue, regardless of how you got the traffic, within their tos of course?

Not only is this a problem for publishers, but it has got to be a big problem for Google in terms of their lost revenue. And the fact that this has been an ongoing problem, it has got to add up to a noticable loss.

One would think that after a rather difficult IPO, Google would need to accelarate the inflow of dollars.

I don't know why Google does what it does, but I do notice that these kinds of "temporary glitches" cause huge headaches for the extreme fringe.

G might do that to eliminate the extreme fringe, at the cost of minor inconvenience to the mainstream.

A big adwords buyer driving traffic to AdSense is not mainstream, in that the adsense site is a "made for adsense" site. To eliminate the extreme cases, delay the ad serving and collect the adwords dollars for zero net gain on the part of the publisher. Extremely "made for adsense" sites will shut down. Adwords still gets paid.

Wow, a lot of aggression there. If things are so bad, why not just put your money where your mouth is and actually quit adsense?

we've noticed a significant drop across the board over past 2 weeks - in # ads served + targeting has become pretty bad too - blank ad spaces showing where used to be spot on - we haven't changed anything - the ads were actually useful to people using our sites... something is in the works for sure... but this has happened before and usually picks back up... probably testing a new formula or working in a system wide upgrade or something? Last time this happened they were upgrading AdWords stats and adding new stuff (channels to AdSense) etc... regardless - hope it gets back on track soon...! just remember how much most of us publishers were making BEFORE AdSense...

What sectors are actually experiencing this? We've NEVER had this kind of flux and our sites cover a broad range of topics. I can understand why those experiencing this will be pissed, but this is not true to all publishers.

The sites I get it on, mostly only have a couple topics, not a wide range like you speak of...

Wide range, more ads to choose from?

Wide range, more ads to choose from?

Yes of course. Even if the topic of the page has limited advertisers, if the main theme of your site offers a deep variety of advertisers, then your Adsense will still show ads. Ads may not be 100% on-target, but based on this thread, even untargeted ads may be better than no ads at all. It pays to have a site with a diversified topic.

I just saw blank space on my site for about 30 sec. on multiple pages - then it was ok . . .

perhaps we need a metric that describes adspace utilization.... it could combine PSA and blank vs. ad frequency. Eventually perhaps combined with click tracking?

I've got blank spaces on all my dating pages. since today and late nite (yesterday).

Really annoying, because of this bug or whatever it is I lose a lot of money.

Something strange this way comes. . .

For the last half-hour (at least -- maybe longer, hadn't checked my sites since yesterday) none of my sites were spitting back AdSense ads.

On a hunch I went ahead and checked using my AOL connection and the ads came up fine. Went back to my broadband Internet Explorer connection -- still down.

Could it be? Could Google possibly have disabled the showing of ads from publisher ISPs to avoid the production of illegal clicks (intended or otherwise)?

If so it's a blessing in many ways -- though I'll be forever curious as to how efficiently the ads are being targeted.

if google wanted to protect the publisher from illegal clicks as you suggest, they would make it impossible to see the adds from your IP period, not make ads appear/disappear based on browser type. Also, they would make the ads invisible to the publisher all the time.

I don't think that's the case at all. I believe that there are some ad server/software issues at google that are responsible for this problem and clearly either they don't see it as big enought to demand their time or it really is a complicated mess.

Must be soem problem... I re-added some ads to pages and added tracking. Impressions is way below page views, and CTR matches what I would expect for their reported # impressions.

Ads apparently aren't showing all the time, and the PSA counter isn't making up the difference.
