Google confuses the hell out of me.

I wish things were more stable. I moved an adsense block yesterday and today I checked my stats to find I was earning 4x more on that block.

Who knows how long it will last or why this it's earning so much in this new position.

Sometimes I'm earning 20 cents a click and other days I earn 1 cent a click. I just can't seem to rely on Google these days.

What do you mean by moving a block? Did you remove a second block and left only one?

Or did you move the location of the block, if yes from where to where?
Thank you

It could be just anecdotal experience.

I didn't log in to AdSense and check my stats for about 5 days recently. When I did go back, I found that I had been earning some of the highest EPC ever.

Just coincidence I'm sure. I don't think Google missed me and was flirting with me to visit more often.

About the only thing you can be certain of with AdSense is uncertainty.

This month is usually a good month for most sites. It is the "spending" season for most US sites and companies. This month has seen my earnings up to "normal" levels for my site... in the past many months my earnings have been pretty bad. This month (Dec.) has been a good earnings month so far.

Farmboy,

My EPC and eCPM suddenly popped up as of Nov. 28th and stayed up. 60% improvement overnight. No changes on my part. CTR is better too but not significantly. Maybe Google gave me some better performing ads all of a sudden, but the ad relevance has been pretty good all along. Beats me.

Yea well, if I wanted stability, I'd get a day job.

Oh wait - I have one.

are you suggesting that the number of times you log into your adsense account has something to do how much you earn?

HMMMMM, there may be even some truth in this. have you noticed that google sometimes shows how many times you have logged into your account.

Why is this do you think?

May be adsense thinks that good webmasters just worry about building a good site not to check earnings every one minute?

what do you think?

I've never seen that, only the time in hours and minutes since I last logged in.

It might be just a coincidence since many publishers are seeing higher CPCs this month.

I noticed something similar too, I am not sure its the same situation.
If I now move the ads from left to right column and give them a new channel name I will earn around 5x more for around few days to a week, then it goes back to lower payments again. That is "smart pricing", right? Its not just my imagination, I seen it many times.
It might also be an ad blocker that needs few days to learn this new ad zone and block it from being displayed but the most popular ad blocker I know blocks Google AdSense entirely regardless of channel name.

If you only MOVED the ad block, how would Google even be aware of this in the first place? This kind of information doesn't get passed along in the Javascript. If you changed the ad format at the same time, I can imagine scenarios in which doing this could help or hurt your EPC.

About the epc and the position of the ad block, I think it does have an effect. Why I don't know. But I have channels for above the fold and below the fold and the ATF ones have consistently 2-3x epc compared to the below the fold. The content ATF and BTF is roughly the same but the difference in epc is definitely there.

Hello... Renaming your channel has been what I have been talking about for a few weeks now...

Artist Mike,

I wasn't talking about renaming the channels, and the differenet channels permannently have higher epc. In the point I'm making, the higher epc is entirely due to the position of the ad. So yes, ad position affects epc, clickthrough rate etc.

If you rename the channel it changes the way that the algo. looks at your ads. It may not last long, but it does change the amount you are paid for the clicks.

Are we sure about this? If you have had a channel that runs for a year, the numbers average out. If you start a new channel on the same ad format, same pages, same colours then the initial figures may show a massive variance from the average annual figures.

Let's assume for a moment that this is an absolute certainty for every publisher.

When considering the time involved in changing each channel name and in considering the opportunity cost, how much would "X" need to be to justify the effort?

FWIW, I have AdSense on some sites where I haven't changed a thing (AdSense related) in over a year. On average, the difference between the AdSense performance on my changed vs. my non-changed sites is minor.

If you're not careful, thinking you've discovered a secret to making more money with AdSense can be about as productive over time as thinking you're the one person in the world who knows whether the ball on a roulette wheel will land on red or black.
