AdSense for Mobile

I just noticed a link in my AdSense reports - AdSense for Mobile

Is this a new feature? If so, this will be a much-welcomed addition. I've been wondering how to monetize on mobile traffic. I hope there are enough advertisers so that the content will be relevant.

Has anyone tried this? If so, what is your experience with this program?

I just noticed it for the first time today. I only have one WAP website, but I'm glad they have this feature now because that gives me an incentive to improve the site.

I know I'm the only one in my widget universe even using .mobi. I wonder what default ads they'll serve up if there are none of my widget ads?

I suppose the only way to find out is to upload some code? Looks easy enough and I'm 100% compliant with it:-)

Hmm. I played with adding this to one of my mobile sites just now (all my sites have mobile versions) and it did not appear to work, what's more, I really can't see what the code is intending to do (it outputs what looks like an html comment into the page.)

THEN I noticed that the Adsense Mobile setup page mentions ads will appear on the site sometime after 48 hours. That's NOT handy. How can we tell this is working when we develop adding it to our sites if you have to wait 2 days to see if you did it right?

Actually it says "...relevant ads should appear within 48 hours."

That might be needed to give it time to spider your page, and figure out what sort of ads to display. Sort of like when you first set up AdSense it showed PSAs for a little while.

But, like I said, unless I implemented it wrong, it wasn't like a PSA showed, nothing showed.

Anyone else try this yet? Can anyone imagine how what looks like an html comment is going to be replaced by an ad?

I'm anxious to get this working on my mobile sites...

I have used in the past Admob. I did make revenues with Admob but Adsense for Mobile would be my first option.

With my content management system, I have the possibility to react, but I have just right now no idea what to do.

asinah: I used the perl code. And, it did "work". It inserted text into the code of the page. What it inserted though, appeared to look like an html comment, which caused it to not to be visible on the page. I looked at it using a browser and a cell-phone.

More technical info I've learned:

On the mobile site I am testing this on, I have seen a mobile ad appear (and then I changed the page layout and it went away again...)

It seems every mobile ad is preceded by a long html comment with info about the ad that follows. If you have just added the mobile ad code to your page, all that you will see before ads start actually appearing is this hidden comment.

So, I guess if you add the code to your page and you see the new hidden comment in the page source, then you did it right...

Additional Info AND GREAT NEWS:

Encouraged by the experience on my test site, I just added mobile ads to the mobile component of two of my biggest sites, and ads started showing immediately, and they look great.

Sticky me if you'd like to check out what the XHTML sites look like with the ads on them.

I'm having problems getting my ads to show. My site is PHP, but when I try to insert the ads using PHP, I get errors because require( ) isn't allowed to load external URLs. Its my own server, but I have no php.ini file to modify. Apparently I'm using a very default version of PHP? I don't know but for the time being I guess its back to regular google ads (which won't show on cell phones but will show on iPhones etc.)

It was my first day with Adsense for Mobile and it outperformed Admob by 50% and still 4 hours to go. Lets see if the trend continues.

Rewriting the code would be possible, but I assume that this would be against the T&Cs

I wonder would google not pay if they noticed many click say for example from blackberry devices .. blackberry devices normally show as 1 ip or should I say a list of ips based on blackberry servers. Each device doesn't have it's own ip. I had a buddy who has google adesense and they wouldn't pay him because because of the high number of vistors he had and they "saw" the same ip addresses and jerked him for 1500.00 bucks. All because of the lack of knowledge they had in regards to how blackberry devices works. Anyone know?

Can't tell for sure, but besides IP address, every phone has a unique phone ID (it's called different things in different WAP languages and carriers) but they all have it and I would assume since this is a mobile ad, Google would be tracking these.

Funny thing about the unique phone IDs, when cell phones were "new", carriers set the unique phone ID to the actual phone number of the phone. Carriers stopped doing this and made this number completely unrelated to the user's phone number when phone users found out that using their browser exposed their phone number to any service they accessed...

Sorry but I sounds strange that your friend lost 1500USD on Adsense for Mobile, due to the following reasons.

1) Every Blackberry phone has a Vendor-ID and we talk about hundreds of different Vendor ID's, combined with search strings from different mobile portals. If your friend has a direct link from a Telco's wap/mobile portal to generate thousands of visitors per day, it would also means that Google Adsense would notice the other Smartphone's that generate clicks on your friends mobile portal and Google knows the site from which the visitor came.

2) From my experience most traffic get's generated from Google Mobile, Yahoo Mobile, Orange, Vodafone etc. which means the user that uses a Blackberry phone made a qualified search from one of the large mobile search engines, so they can be traced back. Yahoo sends us traffic from 30 different mobile servers a day such us.m.yahoo.com/id.m.yahoo.com etc plus the network providers send a string such as insptid=#*$!#*$!#*$!xx. We have a small numbers of visitors via Jumptap and they are mainly used in the US with a large number of Blackberry's and many use __ufps=#*$!#*$! as the identification and it changes all the time.

3) Many Blackberry's that browse our content, make use of WiFi spots because it is cheaper in data charges and we see a large number of Blackberry's connecting from WiFi spot's.

Your friend should have provided the log file to Google.

Did your friend received the funds for the other mobile devices that generated clicks to his site?

If your site is developed already in xhtml, you can validate the site in ready.mobi and make adjustments as suggested in the validation report.
