Splitting Ads Into Smaller Units

More units, same number of ads, more money, maybe?

I'm not big on loading a page up with more than one regular adblock (I usually, meaning there are exceptions, limit it to 1 regular adblock and 1 AdLinks unit per page).

But I've been experimenting with using 3 - 234x60 adblocks (stacked one above the other) in place of a single 250x250.

Same number of ads, about the same amount of space.

The result has been interesting. At the worst there was no real increase in income. At the best income went up around 50% for those pages.

The best part is that I no longer see a 250x250 block with a single text ad centered in it and a bunch of excess whitespace surrounding the ad.

The downside seems to be less CPM ads on those pages.

Anyone else tried this?

If so, did it work out well for you or not?

I did something similar on one site. The only thing I didn't like about it was the "Ads by Google" logo repeated. I was trying to get the effect of one big block of ads. Other than that, I didn't notice any difference in eCPM.

...the "Ads by Google" logo repeated...

Yeah, I thought that looked a little odd but it doesn't seem to have had a negative effect.

When I did that, I stacked three 234x60 ads so it looked odd. Yours will be less obvious. I think if it improves your revenue, it's worth it!

As a variation to the above, stack two or three vertically or horizontally and vary the color schemes.

Keep the background the same, but change the text and link colors. Maybe even put each on a multiple colors rotation.

It's sounds tacky, but if you choose your colors wisely, it can be done and still look good. I've done it on a site visited by business professionals and made it look good.

The results were positive.

Now give each one a custom channel A B C and you can pinpoint your metrics even more. I am thinking of doing the same except 3 PPC and 3 PPA per page, whenever they fix PPA.

I have not tried that but I would recommend you keep experimenting. Go from 3 stacked 234x60 units to 2 stacked. Then go down to one. Don't limit your imagination when it comes to experimenting. You might find that two units work better than three. Let us know!

I experimented about 2 weeks ago with a skyscraper. I went from 120px wide to 160px. Turns out it didn't work all that great for my site. Oh well, lesson learned. Keep experimenting!
