Using the eCPM stats from Adsense

What does this mean to you?

I was wondering if and how anyone uses their Adsense ecpm stats in evaluating their site/pages.

- What is it REALLY telling you?

- Do advertisers know how much they are paying per thousand?

The eCPM number lets you compare the performance of different revenue streams, regardless of how they're priced. Let's use a hypothetical comparison:

- AdSense has an average eCPM of $5 on your site.

- Your leading affiliate program has an average eCPM of $15.

- The display leaderboards or skyscrapers on your pages have an average CPM of $10.

This information tells you that your overall eCPM from those three sources is $30. More important, it also helps you decide how to best allocate your screen real estate. (In the hypothetical case above, AdSense provides incremental income but isn't the main source of revenue; on another site, AdSense might be the main game and would deserve placement "above the fold" where every visitor could see it.)
