I reported a site, what happens now?

So, I discovered an MFA scraper site that has stolen some of my content. I clicked on the "Ads by Google" link and went through the reporting procedure. As part of that, I checked the box that said that they had stolen my content.

Now, several hours later, I checked my email and found a message from Google that gave me instructions for filing a DMCA notice with them. Well, I really don't want to write the letter. I guess I could, but it seems unnecessary. I'd rather see that account get banned from AdSense, and then see if it goes away.

My question is, will Google take a look at that site and the information that I sent to them? Or, will they wait until I file an official DMCA request before they do anything? It seems to me that if they spend two minutes looking at the site and the info that I provided, they would surely ban the account.

Thanks.

Probably won't act until you file that DCMA.
For all google knows, you could have have stolen it from them.

You'll need to file the DMCA -- it only takes five minutes (assuming you've access to a fax) as they've got some boiler plate samples you can use and just alter the details to reflect your situation.

I've found them very responsive and, ignoring the fact that they should be able to pick up and nuke the scrapers automatically, fairly prompt. Takes them a couple of weeks to cancel offending blogger accounts -- I'm waiting on my first Adsense cancellation at the moment.

Google DMCA section and the points to copy across for the fax can be found here: [google.com...]

Adsense won't do anything about copyright infringement without a DMCA. I reported an Adsense site with millions (yes, millions) of Google-indexed pages of scraped text and images, and this site is still proudly showing Adsense ads months later despite its extremely obvious copyright infringements. The infringing site thankfully doesn't have any of my content (as far as I know), so I can't file a DMCA.

Note that the offender will know who you are since they know from where they copied the content.

I've had them crying on the phone because they lost their account.

I double lock my door and sleep with a pistol near by now!(

But it does work (DMCA) and it is the only thing that work.

Good reason to register your domain names using a PO Box. I always have. I only check the box every week to two weeks so they'll need to camp out at the post office for a LONG time if they wanna get me!

Sweet. Funny how scammers are always regretful... when they get caught. It reminds me of my antispammer days. Keep up the good work.

Make sure you're on solid legal footing for any claims you make. The beauty of a DMCA (from Google's point of view) is that it makes you legally responsible for the information Google are acting on.

Most "scraper" sites have a shaky but possible fair-use defense, so it might be a good idea to write to the scraper and his ISP threatening legal action before you actually initiate any.

Thanks for the help, folks. I guess I'll file the DMCA.

stuartmcdonald: Thanks for the link. I'll look for the boilerplate letters.

jomaxx: I'm on solid footing. This content is in the Internet Archive at least 7 years back. I recently moved (and expanded) the content to my own domain away from my academic site. Google knows that I run both sites thanks to Webmaster Tools. Hopefully that will be enough.

Thanks again.
