I'm seeing the same thing EFV and I too have a travel planning site. I have quite a drop-off of UK visitors which I interpret as a response to the recent terror troubles there.
I think it's just my niche, but June was pretty bad, but after July 4 weekend, things usually go pretty well. A report I saw said that 48% of Americans aren't taking summer vacations this year, so, for those of us trying to make a living, that's probably a good thing, though the long-term trend of Americans working too much is disheartening.
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to better days ahead, hopefully, because the last few weeks of June and the 1st 4 days of July were pretty awful.
HOW do you reach that high figure?
I mean, my major site attracts around 1000 uniques every month, and yet my average earnings are nowhere near that amount. I am lucky if I make over £200 per month!
So how do you do it? Do you put up multiple websites, do you carefully tailor ad content, or what?
I would love to know, as I desperately need to earn much more money than I am making at present with my true ghost stories site.
Thanks.
I think its plain to see that the way to increase your income is to increase your traffic. They folks who are making big money are gettin many thousands of unique visitors per day, not per month.
Now increaseing your traffic 10 fold may not be so simple, but that is the road to more income.

Traffic is obviously a big factor, but topic can be important, too. Are people who read true ghost stories actively looking to buy things (as they might be if, say, they were reading a product review or researching a trip)?
If you haven't already done so, you might want to consider adding a section with in-depth travel information for people who are interested in ghosts: e.g., pages about "ghost tours," castles with ghosts, hotels that claim to have ghosts, etc. Such a site might well get publicity and inbound links (thereby getting more traffic) while attracting better-paying ads and generating more ad clicks.
Note: I know we don't do "site reviews" here, but the above comment isn't a site review (since I haven't seen the site under discussion): It's an example of how a topic that may seem "non-commercial" could be given a more commercial and profitable twist.
"...whatever the content is king people say links bring in the dollars..."
Content is more of a long-term game plan. If you found some other way to generate traffic, it might not last forever but it can't be denied that "the proof is in the pudding." Whatever makes money and doesn't get you banned is great!
Now would you like to share this method with the rest of us? Or you could sticky mail me with your tactic if you prefer not to make it public ;-)
Build a good site that people want.

I am not surprised. EG my site gets 4 to 5k uniques daily from google searches alone. You need that much traffic to get "thousands of $ per month. In my case 3+

You build a site or sites that are head and shoulders above the rest. There is no secret. Thats all. But the problem is that not everyone can do that! If you do then incoming links and so search engine succsess is almost gauranteed. If not maybe plumbing or car valeting is your thing? There are no tricks. Or at least non that are going to be long term.

Would your true ghost stories site make a good best selling book in the real publishing world? If so then get it published! But equally if not then you answered your own question as to why you only have a small amount of traffic...

Anyone else doing worse this month? This is my worst month this year so far. All the other months were not bad. June was looking like it was headed downward but this month...ughhh!

You are already doing great if you manage to make £200 on 1000 uniques. That's 20 cents PER UV. Just find a way to increase traffic, and if you manage 20 cents per uv, you can afford some very high quality traffic.

Hahaha. A towed away car and a man with a burning head barely constitutes terrorism, never mind "terror". We had to deal with a thirty-six year armed campaign from separatists, remember?

That's awesome! Now imagine you get 4000 uniques a day - that means you'll be making £24,000 per month!
So far, halfway through the month, my daily July earnings are behind those from June. But even at that rate, July 2007 stands to be my second most successful Adsense month ever.
It's due partially to lower traffic (related to summer, probably) but primarily to a drastically lower CPM. And I have two sites that are not very closely related, yet it's consistent across both. Horrible.
But the fact that others are doing well gives me hope that maybe "my advertisers" will flip the switch sometime soon.
BTW, love the gCPM comment. :)
went down to half of the daily average in july with almost the same amounts of visits... summer time in germany, people spend cash on holidays
The fact that Webmaster World's forums are much quieter than usual should be a good hint that a lot of people (including advertisers and online shoppers) are in the mountains, on a lake, or at the seaside. :-)
