Over the past years, I've been slaving away at the site and the traffic increased about 10-15 times. During the same years, my CPM has been steadily decreasing.
When Google introduced CPM-based ("site") ads with targeteable channels, I thought this might save me: indeed, when I tried putting custom channels, I noticed that "site" (non-contextual) ads had almost the same CPM as in the good old days...
However, to my surprise, as the traffic to the site increased, Google not only didn't increase the share of ads served on the CPM basis, it actually reduced it! Right now, almost all ads on my site are contextual. And at the same time, the performance of contextual ads sunk into sub-dollar CPM territory.
Needless to say, I am looking for alternatives to the current setup.
My questions:
1) I don't believe it's possible, but just to be sure: is there a way with AdSense to show ONLY "site" (non-contextual) ads? I'd rather show my own ad than the stuff they're serving.
2) Has anybody ever tried replacing AdSense with DoubleClick or anything similar?
3) I've tried changing ad layouts and getting rid of the non-performing units. What happens after each change is highly suspicious - for a day or two my CPM goes up, then plunges even further. What gives?
Any suggestions appreciated.

what you see here could be due to banner blindness. people tend to ignore everything that they know is an ad.
Thanks! That's a good point. And it could be part of the problem... However, I think it has more to do with the percentage of site vs contextual ads Google is serving. I am pretty much giving up on contextual ads at this point and I am trying to find ways to get more "site" ads...
