I contacted Google about it and was basically told that it was my fault and they had done nothing to cause this.
I then got the same email as you a couple of weeks ago and when I followed the insturtions my auto login started working again. Today it stopped for no reason.
Something's broke and it ain't on my machine Mr Google.

[edit reason] fixed link [/edit]
I read that thread (there's summint wrong with the link, btw), but I think this is a different (perhaps, maybe, possibly) issue. This was an enforced 'change-your-login-username-and-password-to-a-Google-account-or-else-we'll-send-the-boys-around' type of wizard.
I can do without that sort of thing at close to midnight but no matter how many e-mails Google sends me to tell me 'Woohoo, your new username and password is...', it's still my old settings that apply.
Fine.
Then it says I can use an existing Gmail (etc) google account.
Fine.
Then when I try to use my Gmail account, it says NO YOU CAN'T. Then it asks me the same set of questions again.
Stupid.
I do NOT want 20 G'ddamn google accounts. I only want ONE account.
I do NOT want a new Gmail account.
I do NOT want a new Analytics account (same as Gmail account).
I do not want a new AdSense account.
I do not want a new AdWords account.
What a load of Google Sh*t.
I had already one Gmail account (never used BTW). When Blogger came out of beta, everyone was forced to switch from Blogger-Account to Google account. While the switch was not flawless, it did work. And now I switched from Adsense login to Google Account with no problems at all. Must be something with your account, I guess.
And Google says:
A user with the email you specified already exists
Please select a different Google Account login to access this account.
Startled by this nonesensical response, I say
Well duh... Of course another user exists, because "I'd like to use my existing Google account for AdSense."
So then I try:
Which best describes you?
And I select:
I have an AdWords account or another AdSense account
And Google drones:
Unfortunately, you can't use a Google Account that you already use to log into an AdWords account or another AdSense account.
And I say:
Why can't I use my existing log in?
And Google drones:
For security reasons, you also can't use an email address that was previously used to apply for AdSense or AdWords.
And I say:
How does logging in with the same email I've used for years pose a security issue?
And Google drones:
We apologize for the inconvenience.
And I say:
An automated apology for a negative user experience is not enough nor is it accepted. I would appreciate if you back off on this badly implemented log in change and allow me to log in the same as usual. This is needlessly complicating my life.
And Google drones:
Please create a new Google Account with a different email address.
I feel myself melting into a Kafkaesque bureaucratic mess
Why, why, why?... This is senseless and pointless. I want it to go away and let me return to the happy login experience I used to have.
For me, it worked like a charm.
Ditto here, I'm relieved to say. I had a Google Webmaster Tools account that I was using for Sitemaps and Google Analytics, so I just changed the AdSense password to match that account's password.
However, I can sympathize with those who are stuck in a Catch-22 situation. (Maybe Google hired a programmer away from my health insurer.)
I had to switch to GMAIL for my adwords account, and it was horrible contrived and didn't work and I continued to login using my non-gmail account. Eventually that stopped working and so I couldn't remember the gmail account, or the other email address associated with it so I was blocked from logging in at all.
I gave support a bunch of possible prefixes to and they corrected me and gave me the correct GMail address!?!?!? Security!
I hope when they try to force my AdSense account to GMail that it works more smoothly.
Google explained what they wanted - with reasons - but there was an option NOT to change.
I chose to change, as the suggestions suited me, and it went through straight away. And it has made life easier to combine different areas. In fact, I've still got one outstanding account separate, and I wish they'd offer me the chance again for that one (I was in the middle of creating and validating it, so it missed the boat!).
I can see for some folk that keeping things separate might be better ... so they gave me that option.
Was I the only person to get a choice?
I had one adsense account with my main email.
I had an adwords acount with my secondary email.
Tried to consolidate by making a new adsense account with secondary email because main email wouldn't work.
Informed by adsense I couldn't use same email for both.
This was quite awhile ago.
Now this happens, and I try to consoliate and it makes things even more complicated.
I had to create ANOTHER new google account, to login to these. Just a ridiculous nightmare.

I'm totally speculating here,
Perhaps, even maybe, or it could be remotely possible that they might use the unified login to bust MFA?
Nah, knew it would be too good to be true.
back to happy login experiences ..
hilarious writing, made me almost spit my coffee over the keyboard. That came from a screenplay, right? Can't be that this is a real world experience with Google?!
For me, they had a slight problem in the German translation, the line was saying, something like, "Do others use the same account as you? [ ] Yes, I am the only user. [ ] No, others will login as well, or I am not sure."
Which is incorrect, of course. The answers should have read: "[ ] No, I am the only user. [ ] Yes, others will login as well, or I am not sure." At first I was a bit puzzled, but then interpreted the answers correctly.
:-)
But see, I can't.
