I implemented Google Section Targeting on one of my sites recently within the content of the article.

I placed the <!-- google_ad_section_start --> code just above the H1 Title and the <!-- google_ad_section_end --> at the end of the article.
This would include about 350 – 500 words of text within the <CODE>.

What was not included within the <CODE> was everything else on the page: navigation, search box, print page, other AdSense ads, footer info...

The AdSense ads appearing on the site are clearly off topic.

Should I narrow the text within the <CODE> to only include the first few lines of text content?

Am I confusing Google with too much content within the <CODE>?

Hard to say, could also be a lack of relevant ads. Also, it took a good couple of months to see even a slight improvement on my site.

It was a slap YEAR before I got what I considered to be good targeted ads on my site (and even so, I still occasionally get a weird one) But for the most part, they are now all I could wish for.

One thing I am noticing is, the pages that are performing very poorly in relationship to AdSense displaying off topic ads are also pages that are in the supplemental index.
