Adsense Responding to Domain "Name", Not Content

and I'm getting no clicks with good traffic as a result

Is there any way to tell the Adsense algo to ignore my domain name? All these comments about "name is not a factor" seems to be BS when it comes to Adsense.

Since I can't use my URL here, I'll tell it like this.

Background: I had a 3rd party build a semi automated site with feeds, pings and all that. He used Wordpress and did a good job and I'm getting okay traffic, but no clicks. The <title> is 'Widgets & Gadgets'

I registered a fiendishly clever name, easy to remember and a slang take-off. The first recognizeable syllable is that of a nocturnal flying mammal.

The site has nothing to do with these NFMs, nor does it have anything to do with a game played with a stick, nor about certain ethnic rites of passage ..

But most of the Adsense ads that are being served relate to NFMs, sticks and rites.

Does adsense have a virtual "Don't Use Domain Name" check box I can tick?

Looking for answers.

hmmm... does the "fiendishly clever name" appear as plain text on the site a lot?

Okay, I had to go look .. even did a search of all pages in the site file structure. FiendishlyCleverName appears only as an image in the banner .. quite lovely, though! ;)

It is in the source code in link form [fiendishlyclevername.com...]

my first site had the word "tones" in the URL - referring to manner of expression, general quality, effect, or atmosphere, etc. I thought it was quite clever and described my site perfectly.

The first year, it served up relevant ads. Now? You guessed it... the only ads it serves is ringtone ads that pay 0.00001 cent per click.

You're probably always going to get some of those ads - how long have you had AdSense on the site? My primary site has a domain that includes the name of my state plus another word. I wanted ads targeted to the state name; for a long time I was only getting ads targeted to the second word, and because it was event-oriented, the ads were targeted more towards people putting on the events rather than the ones who were looking to attend them (most of my visitor base) It's taken about 18 mos to get what I consider good targeted ads on that site. I'm assuming (well, maybe hoping is a better word) that as we go along, Google is figuring out what works on the site as far as user interest and clicks, and is delivering more ads skewed this way than that.

But it could all just be coincidence, too, who knows.

>> source code <<

I suppose you could try wrapping the internal links in the source code with the AdSense "ignore" code.

I'm not sure that would work, but it might be worth a try on one page. If this is happening site wide, I'd try it on the homepage first. Maybe wrap the main navigation links to start and see what happens.

Or do the opposite and use the "focus" code to tell AdSense that the rest of the text is more important.

Or do both.

The focus code is:

<!-- google_ad_section_start -->
(Your content goes here)
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The ignore code is:

<!-- google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) -->
(code/content to be ignored goes here)
<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

I suggest starting with the home page because it seems to me, from my experience, that AdSense sometimes sets a theme for the site from the homepage and it can sometimes be difficult to get it to adjust to the content on interior pages. I have no idea why that happens.

how long have you had AdSense on the site?

This site has only been up for about 3 weeks. I've been in the Adsense program with a number of other sites almost since the beginning of Adsense.

Actually, the home page has pretty good ads. They are about widgets. On secondary page and linked pages (yes, I'm using the full domain in the internal links), the content is mostly about that nocturnal flying mammal.

So it seems like everyone is getting ads based on words in the domain. Would that be because of the *domain name* or because the domain name is used in a number of internal links?

I sure wish that Adsense guy would comment on this.

ASA doesn't seem to have near the presence here that AWA has in the AdWords forum. At least not for the past year or so.
