Adsense referral keywords

What is the meaning of the adsense referrals keywords choice?

I pick a referral and a format, and then place it on one of my pages, right? Where do the keywords come in?

The keywords appear to be pre-selected by Google staff to produce the sort of ads that are in the category you're in when you choose the keywords options. You can see what the keywords are, right there on the page, when you choose the option.

I think this is to allow all the ads to rotate through your ad slot, and to automatically allow new ads to be shown without your having to go back to the AdSense control panel and add them.

Whether this is a good idea or not depends on how focused the category is relative to the subject domain of your site of the page you're placing the ad on.
