I'm interested in your experience in site design and layout for Adsense. Primarily, I'd like to know whether sites work better if they're a little on the ugly side, or just plain vanilla or prettied up a some. Do uninspiring Wordpress templates work better than anything else? Bear in mind, I'm not asking about ad placement about which much has been covered.
I realize you don't want to distract visitors with dazzle and geegaws. Personally, I just can't seem to allow myself to do ugly. I try for tasteful simplicity with my templates, perhaps just a cut above mill run Wordpress stuff.

Ditto. Which is why my pals with ugly sites are making 10 times more than me.
They say their sites "won't last forever and neither will adsense". They also say "who cares if people are clicking because they want to escape their ugly site or they get tricked by blended ads that look like navigation - bottom line is they clicked!"
When they've made their bundle, and rolled it into a bigger bundle, it isn't going to make a difference whether there's adsense or not.
Going by my sliding eCPM over the past six months, I'm certainly wondering along the same lines too...
I search for "keyword" in search engines. I open the search results using NEW TABS. If I land on an ugly site, I'll just click the "X" to close the tab and continue opening new links from the search results, also opening in new tabs.
In the old days before tabbed browsers, I'll click on an interesting link (could be ad links) to get out of the ugly landing page.
