- Less internal and external links on the page
- Having the ads with the same background color as the page background
- Having one leaderboard 728 x 90 text ad at the top and one at the bottom of the page
- Having one 300x250 text ad at the middle of the page somewhere among texts

Having one 300x250 text ad at the middle of the page somewhere among texts
This raises a question I'm going to need some feedback on. I have one particular site that I'm getting ready to place ads on. Typically, I'm a fan of adding a 468 x 60 banner either directly below an article's title blended into the page background, or at the very end of an article so that it's not too direct. I'm trying to decide if its better to keep this strategy up for the new site (468 x 60 banner below an article's title but above its content) or to place the 300 x 250 rectangle and have the content wrap around it (to the right of the ads and then continuing below it). I see so many 300 x 250 ads out there, I really don't know if these perform well or if its too "in your face" for some site visitors. Anyone have feedback on how that size performs for them?
Seriously though, someone said forget the content, because that's the least important. I disagree completely. Good content is a winner as it helps your site grow and as it grows - so too can the income if you get everything else right. Not only that, you can have a bit of pride in something you have built - that's worth more than money any day. But there again you're effectively getting paid to do something you enjoy so that's a bonus as well.
Also, if you're site(s) is big enough and diverse enough to ride out the ripples you can rely on your AdSense income. Always have a cushion of spare cash though to soften any blows that come along - including these times when the dollar is worth less than toilet paper ;-)
If you have a left to right eye tracking action encouraged by your site layout, basically normal reading, the large rectangle and small banner do better. If you encourage your visitor's eyes to hop and skip around the page then the letterboard and towers are a more productive choice.
This is just from personal experience.
YMMV
