Is this real

A friend whose website kinda dumped a lot in traffic got a letter supposedly from Google offering optimisation tips.

It looks genuine besides that it's in German but from the Google Ireland office. I thought Google.de has their own staff, but it might be the usual EMEA (European Market something) outsourcing that seems to be quite common.

It's not the custom placement thingy, mentioned in a thread here. I remember reading here something about this kinda mail, but but can't find it.

Anyone got similar mails in the past?

Google has been sending optimization invitation to select Adsense publishers for a long time now. They will call or email the publisher and you can get a one-on-one discussion about the site with an Adsense rep.

It's always a great opportunity. In our case, our Adsense rep has recommended us to their various pilot programs so it is always good

There just seems to be a conflicting message here. His traffic dumped by 50% so they could easily optimise it by giving him back his traffic.

I didn't get such a message but my account is doing [knock on wood] quite well in the moment.

The selection seems to be not by how much potential you have [as what the email claims] but by some other criteria, maybe purely random.

It would make more sense if this would be two different companies, but as it is, one Google department takes income away then the other writes to people. This must lead within Google to some kind of conflict if they have really nothing to do with each other as Google claims. It means that the adsense team also has to follow a moving undisclosed target like all of us. Must be a "joy" to work in the adsense team if it is really like this within this everflux scenario. How can you increase your profit if your own company works possibly against you? If they don't compromise each other that means that the claim SERPS are not compromised by ads can't be true.

Anyway thanks for the answer.

I was in on the Adsense optimization program for a few months -- then my traffic got hit by Jagger.

Your Adsense rep cannot do anything with your traffic decrease. My Adsense rep even forwarded my case to the Google search team and even my Adsense rep was not able to help. They are two different departments with different purposes -- so don't expect the optimization invitation as a way to get back the lost traffic.

Yes, but the point I was trying to make as this is so, that the adsense team has to react to the SERPS team, within the same company. This must lead to conflict.

This is on a bigger scale as if you have a business partner that does what they want and you have run after these changes.

Nah, I do around 20 times better than him. He makes around 500 a month.
